Hello!

What time do your primary school kids go to bed? My 6-year-old fights bedtime but still struggles to wake up in the morning.

  • I agree with routine sleep time with young children. Eight hours sleep even ten if they need it. The morning routine is also a very important one some kids need the same routine 7 days a week up at the same time no matter. Weekends start with a bike ride or park activities right after breakfast just for fun. I think communicating is the key talking about wake up time the night before can help get kids up and at it.

  • My daughter is turning 6 soon as well! We aim for starting our bedtime routine around 7:30pm which involves the bathroom, teeth brushing etc. then they get to unwind and relax. We aim to get them in bed between 8-8:15pm, and most often than not, they fall asleep before 8:45pm. Sometimes earlier. My kids usually wake up around 7:15am or longer if i dont wake them! Consistency is key and overtime their body clocks will adjust.

  • The younger the earlier. I think a routine is really important as their body clock gets used to the times and it happens easier. 8 & 10 currently go to be at 8 and can read for 30 minutes then it is lights out. They are often asleep in no time.

  • In general a six year old child needs between nine and twelve hours of sleep, so their bedtime should ideally be somewhere between quarter past seven and and nine o’clock (which depends on the time they wake up and how much sleep they need. How late does she wake up ? I think a clear routine is important too. For my youngest I have to make sure to reinforce winding down time from dinner time onwards (meaning no more activities that overstimulate or provoke excitement, no more devices and a bath before bed with Epsom salt)

  • I have a 6 year old and she goes to bed at 7pm and then we read books for 30 minutes before she goes off to sleep. This works most nights however i do find this harder to achieve in summer when it is a lot lighter at night and she doesn’t understand the time yet.
