Hello!

I’m a mum of a 10yo and 6yo and they left me with a belly.
I’m told I’m small, I’m 158cm and usually wear size 8-10 tops and 8 pants, though I’ve always got this extra bundle around my belly waist area, and so I’m always still looking 4 months pregnant when I’m not.
I don’t want and don’t have funds for surgery (nor will I have time for post surgery healing). Any tips and tricks?
Dieting wont work (I can not function without my carbs, food and full stomach). No gym, I don’t have that extra money.

  • I did find that losing some weight overall helped with my belly fat. Yeah, I know you’re not keen, but you might have to think about it. Other than that, lots of walking. I incorporated it in my day: taking the kids to school, picking them up, popping to the shop for milk. Slowish but effective.

  • After 3 kids i also have a tummy plus the skin sags. My Doc has said that no amount of exercise will change that and the only thing that will work is surgery. Its a massive surgery where they cut you from hip to hip. No thanks and no way would i spend that money either

  • There are lots of free exercise routines to follow online. Videos to watch and move along with.
Pilates and Yoga are really good for body shaping. Walking is good to and a good way to get around while keeping yourself healthy at the same time. If diet can’t be changed then it really is just exercise that will help.

  • I’m not sure if you’re referring to extra weight in the belly or if it’s just bloating. I definitely suffer from bloating and am similar size to you.
I have been working with a naturopath to help me with my diet and she’s helped me reduce my bloating little by little.. perhaps something is making you bloat?

  • There are heaps of workouts available on YouTube, but cardio exercise is best to move weight. Regular walks, swimming or bike riding are perfect. Things you are do with your kids – even getting out and kicking a ball with the kids are great. Any movement that increases your heart rate.

  • Along with walking outside in nature, I do indoor exercise; Yoga is another form of exercise that is relatively cheap. I purchased a DVD and use that rather than a class. It can be done in the comfort of our home and is gentle on my body and it helps with body awareness.

  • I’d recommend something like Pilates and maybe a massage oil for your belly area.

  • Walking is a free form of exercise and it so good for overall health and wellbeing to get outside in the outdoors and nature and exercise. I also embraced the new shape of my body and work on being fit and healthy rather than the size of any part of my body.

  • There are lots of exercises you can do at home without going to the gym. I have kids of a similar age- 10 and 13. I started running after having my first and kept it going. My second was a caesarean, which has left me with a little looseness, but I will say the running definitely tones it up. Hiking is also fabulous exercise too. Both can give a full body workout.

  • I am the same vote 6 kids – newborn – teenagers. 40 – 4 foot 11 – weight 50. What works for me was a few exercise, energetic kids, house hold chores, walking, yoga, a few times a month. Slowly reducing my food portions every month, taking natural remedies for stress, anxiety, bloating and regulating my hormones. It’s has work a little I gone from 16-12 but it taken 13 years.

  • A lot of walking can make a difference, and I found it a nice peaceful undemanding way to get to different places as well. Although I truly don’t think you can make a difference without some modification to your diet, though it doesn’t have to be forever. Try just avoiding pasta and see what happens.

  • I hear you mum member. I have really had a lot of trouble getting rid of mine. I have recently taken up yoga and stretching at home and also purchased a treadmill and try to walk every day or every second day depending on what i have on that day. I also try to do 10,000 steps each day if possible. It sounds like a lot but once you get into the new routine it becomes part of your lifestyle and is easy to maintain. I don’t diet but i do try and watch what i consume and have also cut back on alcohol.

  • I am the same height, 41yo, Mum of an almost 2yo, almost 5yo and 7.5yo. I have the same issue with the stomach area, its very frustrating isnt it! I ended up purchasing a treadmill, that way I dont have to pay for the gym but I also am not confident enough to attend the gym anyway. A treadmill at home allows me to do either a slow walk or slight jog- whatever I feel on the day at my own pace. I find with three children, work, and life in general I do not have time to do other things like pilates or yoga which I am hoping will change in the future as they sound a good workout for areas like stomachs and for toning. The only other thing I can suggest is…dont be too hard on yourself. Your little tummy hasnt appeared from nothing, it was a home for two babies that needed your protection while they grew- so try and be proud of that great job your tummy did X

  • I’m sorry to be brutal, but you probably need to manage either diet or exercise if you really want to see a difference. You don’t have to go to the gym; go for a walk every day and you’ll start to see a difference. And you don’t have to diet necessarily, just eat fewer carbs and less junk and you’ll slowly see a difference too.

  • It sounds like you may still have some ab separation? I’m not sure if you’ve even seen a women’s physio but I highly recommend it if you haven’t. If you can’t afford to see a physio you can self test for it. Google is your best friend to both test and give you some simple exercises to improve it. Traditional exercises like crunches/sit ups etc will only make it worse if thats the problem.

  • I feel your pain, it is one of the hardest things to shift. I have recently taken up yoga and Pilates and also try and get on my treadmill and walk for 30 minutes everyday. I know it sounds like a lot but if you slowly include it in your day it becomes a habit. I do maybe 15 minutes of stretches and Pilates moves and then my walking. It really was a lot at first but now it is easier to maintain.

  • My version fo gym is getting involved at least twice for 10-15min each day at something active the kids are doing. I have my own trike and we ride around the kitchen bench. When my legs hurt from striking i become a tunnel and squat to not let the trikes through. I lie on the floor and they pretend to be aeroplanes on my feet. We do running races outside. Kids are often super fot so I take their lead. I make the goal to keep up with them so i dont miss it all This gives them some awesome memories and me even better ones plus they seek me out to play which is the absolute best.

If people are calling you small it sounds like you look amazing. Maybe worth considering a change in style that feels more you now? My bone structure and size have changed since having kids and I felt lost for a long time but am now changing what I am wearing and finding styles that fit my figure now.

  • oh i feel you! i always feel like my stomach is always the most difficult part to lose! sometimes its so stubborn that you feel like no matter what you do or eat, it won’t budge. have you confirmed that your muscles have moved back into place? that could also be one of the reasons too.

  • I have a cheapy exercise bike at home and I put on a YouTube video of a spin class and go to town. It’s great for tummy toning. Also exercise alike crunches, sit ups, squats, mountain climbers, skipping rope. Doing a few sets of these together each day should give you results. Definitely feel the need to have carbs. If bread wasn’t so good life would be so much easier!!
