avent is great. wait till the baby’s born and see how you go. i had a pump and as great as it was, i had only used it a few times but that could’ve been avoided. also some babies don’t like the bottle.

You never know how your body will react so I had my breast pump washed and sterilised just in case, I have the tommee tippee closer to nature electric breast pump and it has done two babies and still has life left for more

It would be strange if your milk dried up after birth?? It can take a while to come in, mine took about 5 days with my first 2 and 3 days for my third. You can hire breast pumps from some hospitals, chemists. I liked the Avent manual pump. Perhaps ring the Australian Breastfeeding Association ABA, a lactation consultant will be able to answer a lot of your questions and help to give you confidence.

I used philips Avent Pump and I bought it two month before gave birth.

If your intent is to get a breast pump, and all goes well with your birth I would recommend renting a hospital grade pump shortly after the birth. I bought the medela swing and it was not worth it. It was much too slow, got water into the tubes very easily and was not as effective as the hospital grade ones I used later. Also found fenugreek pretty effective in increasing supply.

My partner bought mine from the chemist at the hospital. I never thought i would have needed one but our daughter was put in intensive care at 3 hours old and fed through an ng tube. I tried breast feeding but she couldnt latch so exclusivly pumped for about a month. We got an electric pump that could be used with batteries as well and also connected with the hospital machines. I wouldnt invest in one unless you need to or want to express,Goodluck!

Don’t buy until after the birth and you know that you’ll need it! Pumping is not for everyone and if lo feeds well then there is no real need to pump to keep up supply.

Breast feeding works individually on every person. I am normally very large breasted and when I tried to feed my new bub he couldn’t get his mouth over my nipples so i used a breast pump immediately to let some milk/colostrum out so he could latch on. After 2 -3 weeks your breasts will regulate your milk. I still expressed so my hubby could do feeds too. The medela swing is a fantastic pump but whatever you do and electric pump is best. Saves you time, which is precious when you have a new bub

I personally wouldn’t buy a breast pump until after you have established breastfeeding (as it isn’t for everyone) I have breastfed my older kids for 18 and 17 months and my 9 month old is still breastfeeding. I started with a $30 manual pump with my first but as I had breastfed for so long with my first I figured I would splash out and buy a secondhand medela swing pump for my second. Best buy EVER! It really is hard, because establishing breastfeeding canbe hard, and you just don’t know how it is going to be with your first. Now I have the electric pump I don’t know how I ever used a manual pump. If you are near a woolworths they were selling a super cheap $7.50 (yes, really only $7.50) manual pump – I saw some at my woolies last week. For $7.50 what have you got to lose? Also, if you don’t have issues with secondhand pumps you can pick up bargains too. I got my medela swing (rrp $249) for $100 seocondhand with 4 extra bottles.

I was really keen to breast feed and found a pump kit for under $100 so I got one when pregnant with my first. Which worked out well because he was premature and i used it heaps. I also intended to have more than one child so I thought I would probably get my use out of it eventually. I couldn’t imagine my husband running out to get it for me after he was born either. But to be safe most people wait. As you usually won’t need one early on, unless you have supply issues or you have a prem baby.

I wouldnt be buying one just yet, if you dont have to express I would wait until atleast week 6 so your body gets into a routine of how much and when bub will want it, after that then look at getting one, heaps on the market I use the Madella which is meant to be one of the best but also love the Avent ones.

Don’t buy anything until after the baby is born. I didn’t go to the expense & worry of getting mine in case everything was fine! There are lactation nurses in the maternity ward at each hospital who will assist after bubs is born. Breast pumps readily available from good chemists, My Baby Warehouse, Target, Big W, Kmart etc that should you definitely need one they shouldn’t be too hard to get! Just wait & see. Good luck
