Hello!

Hi, I want to start doing things with marzipan and want to know how long do I leave it in the moulds I have so I don’t take them out while they are too soft.

I want to do some for a baby shower cake so need to know how you colour it and what with. For example I want to do a baby but would like to give it a flesh colour as well as some rosy cheeks and hair colour as well as the nappy it has on depending on if it is a girl or boy.

They are marzipan moulds but so far I have only used them to make chocolate with. Where would you get the colour from and is it done when it is set. Thanks all.

  • The only time I ever knew of using marzipan was when mum made Christmas cakes. We have a local cake decorating shop that runs regular cake decorating classes, they even have them for kids during school holidays

  • Some cake supplies shops run decorating classes. The staff should also be able to advise you

  • cake decorating, or you can just eat it, but I loath it – not very German of me, but blagh!

  • Dust moulds with cornflour. Marzipan shapes can keep upto a week in cold weather, so maybe try a test run before hand. I use gel colours as they are concentrated and easier to use than liquid colours.

  • Dust the moulds with icing sugar so it will not stick. It does no need much time in the moulds about 30 minutes is enough, do a few samples to get it right, temperature and humidity will make a difference to the outcome. Use paint brush to dust off the icing sugar and to apply paint. In some supermarkets there are cake decorating paints, or go to a speciality shop. Blend colours as you would for water colours. You can also find information on line. Youtube is excellent for instructions.

  • Thank you very much for that hint

  • Make sure you dust the mold first with some cornflour to help it come out and then use a paint brush to dust it off when your done. Also another good site is http://www.cakecentral.com. com

  • Thank you for that. That’s all I want is to do it this once for my Daughter than it will chocolate used in it again. Thanks for the advice as I do have a few books but they are not so helpful

  • You don’t need to leave it in the mold long. I decorate cakes for fun and the best tools I have found for learning without courses is you tube. Look up sugar craft and it should send you in the right direction. Hope this helps

  • Same as the other Mums answers, Iook for a course? the only experience I’ve had with Marzipan was cake decorating at school.

  • Thanks for posting but I have no interest in doing a course on this but thanks for your input I will just play with it if I have to and work it out or have fun stuffing it up :)

  • There are stacks of courses you can do that will teach you all of this.
