Hello!

Due to illness after birth, myself & daughter, we unfortunately couldn’t establish a good breast milk supply. I was still expressing but not getting enough to sustain her and had to supplement her with formula. Now, at almost 11 weeks old, she is refusing the bottle at some feeds and nuzzling for boob. I am still producing a small (very small) amount of breast milk, therefore what I’m wondering is, if I allow her to start suckling again will this, in time, reestablish my supply?

  • I was always told, the more a baby sucks, the more milk you will produce. The less they feed, the less milk you’ll have. I see no reason why your milk production won’t increase if bub starts regular feeds. I have no idea how long it will take though. Good luck with it all, I have such good memories of breastfeeding my babies

  • yes, but it will take some work and patience

  • You should be able to. I highly recommend running your hands from the top of the breast towards the nipple (all around the breast) in the shower. This helps to stimulate the flow of milk. I hope that makes sense. I also highly recommend silicon nipple shields to help protect your nipples from becoming sore. If your daughter is sucking a lot and hard they will help with friction and that sore burning feeling. Good luck.

  • I think so!

  • I believe so – talk to a doctor or lactation specialist if you have trouble.

  • If you haven’t completely dried up, certainly! It may take a bit of work from her and you, but it should come back.

  • there are some good comments here

  • i dont think it would be a bad thing

  • If you still wanted to try and establish a supply you could try a supplemental nursing system which is keeps bubbly at the breast while still receiving a supplemt if needed if your supply is on the low side. Generally if you are still akin some milk chanes are you can still increase your supply. once you get to three onto your
milk changes to supply and demand which makes it slightly more difficult. You can try fenugreek supplements also. Many mums swear by them. I would recommend getting in touch with a lactation consultant to also.

  • an interesting question, good luck, you will both need lots of patience

  • Definitely! sucking is the number one reason you get constant milk supply! kEep it up!

  • How did you go? No harm in trying.

  • how did it work out?

  • How have you gone? Have you managed to get the milk to come back in?

  • Go for it! Keep putting her to the breast and you should be able to build up your milk supply. You could also try ‘booby bikkies’ to help boost your supply. Good luck with it, I hope it goes well!

  • Yes it should in most cases.

  • Yes, just keep at it and eventually you’ll produce enough milk for what your baby needs.

  • I also drank a ‘Mother’s Milk’ herbal tea every day.

  • Yes

  • I think it will work. I became v sick w the flu when my son was a few mths old. He became sick too. I wasn’t able to breastfeed him for days (someone else bottle fed him). Anyway, as soon as I was well enough, I breastfeed him, and though the supply was minimal at first, it increased over time. He fattened up! So it can work for you; your body will respond.
