Hello!

Granddaughter, 3 years old, cleans her teeth with toothpaste up to 10 time in a day. Are there long term consequences of this and will she grow out of it?

  • Yes, it is possible to brush your teeth too much. Brushing your teeth too often or too vigorously can wear down the enamel of the teeth. Overbrushing causes the gums to recede, which can make them more susceptible to disease.

  • Okay, wow – ten times a day is a bit much!
    Is it an OCD thing?

  • Three times a day is excellent. She may be damaging her gums by doing so.

  • My dentist has told me to stop brushing my teeth too much and I was only doing it about four times a day. It can reduce the enamel of the teeth so I would try and get her to reduce and always only use a soft brush

  • I think this is definitely too much Perhaps take them to see a dentist who can reiterate the importance of teeth brushing but also explain how often.

  • You can do damage also to much brushing can recede gums. Hopefully she has a very soft brush and mild/gentle toothpaste but I also would suggest a visit to the friendly dentist. Best wishes to you both.

  • I would encourage her not to brush so many times. I can’t do teeth good to be brushed so often. Maybe check with your dentist.

  • If you brush your teeth too hard it can damage them, in saying that baby teeth aren’t made to last forever. I’d speak to a dentist but as long as they’re not having too much toothpaste and have a soft brush and aren’t brushing too hard it should be OK.

  • I think she will definitely grow out of it. As long as it’s a super soft bristled brush and minimal toothpaste is used, it shouldn’t be too much of a drama

  • Wow! Up to 10 times is a lot but polar opposite to some that won’t at all. It would depend on the tooth paste and brush used. Hopefully it’s super soft and won’t cause any damage. Maybe encourage to just brush after main meals and consult a dentist for professional advice.

  • A dentist might just be the best person to talk to about teeth cleaning and may be able to help with a chat and setting up a teeth cleaning schedule.

  • Yes I sure think that too much vigorous brushing can be harmful for the enamel. I would ask the dentist about it and ask to explain this to my child.
