Hello!

I usually buy a Christmas leg ham every year but this year have decided that not this year as they are so expensive what other type of food should I replace it with any hints.

  • Another way to go is too purchase a variety of meats for a platter. We have have purchased a selection of sliced meats on a platter and it went down incredibly well with everyone. It was also lighter on the stomach and did not leave anyone feeling like their stomachs were overloaded with food.

  • If a ham is usually the centre piece of Christmas lunch or dinner you could always replace it with a roast chicken or roast beef. I find they are usually the best price wise. I save up my Woolies points to redeem at Christmas so I can get a ham. They are definitely getting pricey!

  • Hmmm good question! There are many good things that scream Christmas to me, the fruits… mangoes lychees cherries etc but also turkey is pretty good cold. I often find our local rsl club gives away hams in a raffle to get people in the door. You don’t have to buy anything it’s just a free raffle.. worth looking into what’s on in your local area

  • I agree; that ham can be quite expensive at Christmas time and have for many years chosen cheaper alternatives. We now purchase a small ham with no bone or sliced ham. We always purchase ham when it is on special and it tastes as good as ham with the bone.

  • You could always buy a smaller amount of sliced leg ham from the Deli section of your supermarket. If there is a special on any time soon you can freeze it ready to use when the time comes. Otherwise Chicken is always my go too as it goes further and most people like it.
