Hello!

I’ve been delegated to bring desserts for our family Christmas. I need to feed 12 adults and 9 kids, 1 needs a gluten free dessert. Does anyone have any ideas on what to feed the masses that will be easy and cheap to prepare?

  • I do agree pavlova is easy and mini pavlova’s is easier to serve (no cutting, less mess)

  • A selection of slices – two or three – would probably be good. Serve with ice cream if you want!

  • I was going to suggest mini pavlovas, but one huge one would probably be easier. I don’t know if it’s all gluten free though.

  • I’m wondering what you went with.

  • I would probably go for platters of fresh fruit, Greek and coconut yoghurts and granola’s and or ice creams

  • A huge pavlova! Oh, is that gluten free? I know they’re delicious and a big one will feed many

  • Why not supply something that is suitable for everybody – all age groups including gluten free. Perhaps a range of fruit in separate containers that people can choose and mix the ones they like themselves. Some brands of icecream are definitely gluten free. There is also gluten free icecream cakes.

  • We always have pavlova, you can always buy a meringue already made,a tin of whipped cream ,strawberries, banana’s,passion fruit, kiwi, blueberries,,ps squeeze lemon juice on cut up banana ,stops it going brown.before you use it.Then cut up all the fruit ,choices of fruit optional, you may like more ,put a layer of cream, cover with fruit, repeat top layer, yum,it’s pretty easy ,refrigerate.

  • Pavlova! A giant pavlova! Topped with whipped cream and lots of fresh fruit. Yum! That’s gluten free, I don’t use any wheat products in mine anyway.

  • A massive choc ripple cake and fruit salad works a treat for crowds

  • Gluten free can be difficult but fruit salad or fruit kebabs for a bit fancier then make a special sauce with cream and liquor for the adults.
There are some great recipes for orange cake that is gluten free so everyone can eat it and if you top it with a good chocolate (check for gluten) ganache it brings it up to special for the occasion.

  • I would have gone for a sweet platter with dipping sause. Love to hear what you did

  • Frog in the pond for the children and big kids with fruit kababs
Fruit truffle and or rice pudding
As I hate cream and jam so not really into the cream jan stuff
    Or chocolate riffle cake.

  • Walnut and cinnamon baked apples; a hit with big and little kids!

  • Depending on ages of children, rainbow jelly cups are always a hit. The fairybread Christmas tree that has been posted on here would also be quick and easy.
For the adults it is really simple to make most cheeseable recipes gluten free just by substituting the biscuits you use for the base with a gluten free one Leda make a great milk arrowroot biscuit that works wonderfully as a replacement. You can also use these biscuits as the replacement in your basic old fashioned lemon Slice recipe.
Trifle would also be easy to make and can be gluten free by using a ready made gluten free cake which you can get generally in Coles and make sure you use a gluten free custard mix.

  • You can buy the Pavlova “Crusts” and fill with whipped Cream then top with fresh fruit – different on each. That should at least be gluten free. You can definitely get Gluten Free Cheesecakes at The Cheesecake Shop. A fruit platter sounds great. If you decide to make cakes, definitely do the gluten free one first. You can buy gluten free cakes mixes quite easily, the cheaper brands are very good. That way there is no risk of cross-contamination from ingredients from the other one coming into contact. If you are going to ice it however you will have to buy gluten free icing sugar/mixture. Icing mix has a binding agent in it but not brands state it on their packaging. As you may/may not know with gluten gree products you have to be careful when buy foods as some companies suddenly start putting gluten in them. I know a guy who bought a product and liked it so he got some more a fortnight later – and didn’t check the label. Fortunately he had only eaten a little bit when he started to feel off colour. When he checked the packaging he discovered they had started putting gluten products in it which he got verified, He was sick off and on for about a week. Even most chocolates/chocolate products have gluten in them. I hope you find it easy to supply a dessert of your liking for your Christmas Meal and you all have a great time.

  • I would go with Trifle and/or Pavlova and/or Cheesecake and/or fruit platters always go down well with my family maybe fruit cake with custard.

    Enjoy your Christmas

  • Pavlova and trifle are always popular here with adults and kids (I don’t put alcohol in the trifle) and also a lovely fruit platter!

  • I’m with everyone else…chpc ripple cake…adult version…dunk each biscuit in cherry brandy…oh so yum..oh and try making it with butternut snaps as well..simply relish..good luck….merry Xmas

  • Pavlova and Chocolate Ripple cake and Trifle are our families traditional deserts for Christmas. Chocolate Ripple cake is usually majorities favourite though! but is very simple to make.
