Hello!

Just wondering if anyone here suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder? How do you cope with it while raising your child? I fear I am damaging my son with my disorder.

  • Many people with borderline personality disorder are highly functional parents.
Some tips for parenting with BPD
    Educate yourself. …
    Develop healthy coping skills. …
    Practice mindfulness. …
    Establish routines. …
    Teach feelings. …
    Get support. …
    Use professional help.
Also your child will observe and imitate your behaviours, so it is important that (when they’re at an appropriate age) you explain the mental illness in a way that they understand that what they are experiencing with you is something they can talk about with you.

  • No, I am not a sufferer. Totally understand your concerns about possibly damaging your son though. At least you are aware of that chance so you can keep a check on yourself, to an extent

  • I am sorry you are suffering from this , my youngest brother told me he wasn’t sure if his wife was as she had a couple of rages in front of our mother which scared us as well, so this year decided not to come to our gathering . The best thing to do first is help yourself by talking to a doctor who understands this disorder and hopefully find treatment for you . In the meantime , try and get a balanced life, perhaps know when you are triggered and see if you can find a technique to help you ( which I’m sure a psychologist can help with ) . Maybe tell your son that you are not well and you are going to seek help, that way he knows that it is temporary and doing something about it . Take care .

  • No I don’t, it must make life and parenting so much harder for you then for the rest of us

  • Stay strong and praise yourself – raising kids is tough. If you do feel things are getting beyond your control seek help. You have acknowledged it & obviously now your own limits.

  • i am glad that you acknowledge it and talked about it on here to let others know that they are not alone.

  • Pleasure Melanie – Wishing you the very best! 🙂 You are not alone.

  • Thanks for your input mums. I appreciate it. 🙂

  • Plenty of people live with disorders and are good parents too. Getting support is important and families can thrive with support.

  • I’m glad your worried & im sure there is a support group you can tap into somewhere that can help you. You should also be under the care of a Dr who should know where to direct you to get resources to help you both. It’s amazing how as a mum your protective side kicks in.

  • I wondered what bpd was. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but I’m sure if you were a possible danger to your child, someone would step up and say something. I would hope so anyway
