Hello!

At my last visit to the dentist we talked about bringing my daughter (2.5yrs) in for a visit. The dentist then gave me an information sheet re brushing twice a day which we do. But it also had a section on flossing, which I should have started by now apparently. But I’ve never heard of anyone flossing their toddlers teeth. Do you and how do you do it?

  • My two year old only flosses because she saw me doing it one day.
She asked what I was doing and asked for a piece of floss then started doing it herself.
She doesn’t do it everyday but a few times a week.

  • Our dentist just recommended it when our kids became a little older and could do it themselves.

  • No only brush

  • I think getting brushing done twice a day is good enough

  • Seriously? We’re lucky if we get the teeth brushed properly once a day and the toothbrush chomped on the other time. Flossing?! This is news to me and a little scary considering how my toddler reacts to ‘mummy’s turn’ of brushing her teeth!

  • never heard of it, good question

  • I can’t see myself doing this to my little miss, it is nightmare getting her to brush let alone floss. I know my dentist kept reminding to me how important it is to floss my teeth’s but never said anything about flossing my little girls.

  • My girls like to floss. Don’t panic too much. It’s more practice and learning.

  • I wouldnt unles there was food stuck in them after eating

  • No way do I floss my toddlers teeth! I still want my hands in tact. Hahaha. I struggle with brushing them twice a day let alone flossing!

  • Yes I do. I do it most days. Since I noticed food getting caught in it. I use the little individual flossing sticks that have dental floss string across it. Easy. My little one is 19 months- but I have been flossing gently since about 14 months when he had more than 1 tooth next to each other.

  • I wouldnt be flossing my 4 year olds teeth and the dentist has never even brought it up.

  • No I don’t floss their teeth. I find it hard enough to get them to brush their teeth properly. I can’t imagine having to floss them as well.

  • My dentist never recommend flossing toddlers teeth , sorry haven’t heard I know it’s recommended as they get a bit older

  • Not sure on this one, but personally I think unless you had a great toddler it would be VERY hard. Mine were 5 when it was discussed at the dentist for flossing, which sound much better to me, and works better. It would be hard to do without causing damage I would think, but just my opinion.

  • Gee, I’ve never heard of this. I think it’s hard enough cleaning their teeth sometimes without adding flossing to the mix. I haven’t taken my 2 1/2 year old for a check up but my dentist recommended bringing children along to see you have a check up first so that they can see what happens and that it isn’t scary (not a clean though, as the brushes are noisy and would be scary).

However, he also said that if if it’s going to traumatise them you can wait until they are older before their first visit, as long as you are vigilant with brushing and check their teeth yourself regularly. I was told that decay in children’s teeth is quite obvious. People will have different opinions, but I know with my daughter she will probably carry on if I tried to take her to the dentist so I am going to wait a bit longer.
