Hello!

I seem to be having issues with my memory – most commonly around words. Words that I know and use often but I can’t seem to speak them when I need them. The other day I had to pause for almost a minute before I could say the word “trackies”
It is probably just a lack of sleep but I am starting to question it because it is happening often and it is impacting my ability to communicate effectively.
I don’t know if I need to be taking some sort of vitamin or something that I am possibly lacking but feel silly seeing a doctor about it.
I am fit and healthy and drink plenty of water.
Is this a common mum issue? My kids are 18 months and 3 years.

  • Oh my goodness, yes!!!
I often start doing something, get distracted and come back and do something else.
A few months back I made a hollandaise sauce for the salmon we were having for lunch and I completely forgot I made it until I went to turn on the thermomix and realised there was something inside!!!!!!!
I also stutter a lot and exactly like you, will forget common words that are always at the tip of my tongue. I feel like it gets worse every year I get older!

  • YES BADLY. I found after having my two boys, I swear I have short term memory loss I find writing reminders and notes help a lot

  • Some medical conditions combined with the medication needed to control them can cause memory loss even at a young age. If I didn’t take my essential life saving medication I may not have much good quality of life. Other medications have not been successful controlling my medical problem

  • You are absolutely not alone with this. I stumble on my words often and find when trying to get something out I just have to pause to sound less silly than actually say the wrong thing. I also get annoyed at myself if I make small errors at work (I pride myself on my work so it really bothers me). A nutritionist friend of mine did suggest because I am so tired through the day to try having collagen before bed as it helps you to get into a deeper sleep. Maybe it could be worth a try to get you more rested and hopefully refreshed.

  • My GP used to say that overthinking our brains can lead to memory loss. Yours could be lacking in vitamins, stress or overthinking as you have small kids that keeps you busy all the time. It doesnt hurt to pop over to a GP and have a blood test and check general health especially if its a real concern , All the best .

  • I have this too when I’m having a lot on my plate am stressed and or tired. I may even wait for a green stop light, forget to pay for an item in the shop, mix up all the names of my kids & hub and have wee accidents with the car.
Time to care for yourself ! Sleep is very important to function properly, but also time for relaxation/me-time and connecting with others. And yes a wholesome healthy diet with plenty of vitamins and minerals is essential for us all.

  • Could be short term, definitely sleep related if that’s a factor. Any stress?
Could try a fish oil supplement?

  • Yes, although my kids are grown up and moved out so I can’t blame them anymore. I often can’t recall a certain word so my speech sometimes comes out wrong. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about at this stage, I have regular blood tests and check ups

  • If ever concerned, check ups can be reassuring.

  • That is one of my symptoms, and I had a stroke.

  • I certainly have this problem and as I’ve aged it has become worse. I’m 56 now and I walk into a room and have to think why I went in there and then I’ll do something there and go out again only to realize I have to go back to do the thing I went in there to do the first time. (That’s just an example, but I can certainly relate to you). Not sure what the answer is, I have blood tests about every 6 months and whatever I do it doesn’t seem to make much difference.

  • Yes I found the more kids I have and less sleep the worse my memory is

  • Yes my memory seems to be getting worse with age. I’m 47. I work full time and find when I do not have a good nights quality sleep, the next day I’m in a daze and very forgetful. I am taking fish oil and try to get at least 7 hrs of sleep. I find using a PC the worst because I quite frankly blank out and can’t navigate my way in some areas. Thankfully I get by in my job because I don’t need to rely on a PC. My job is more hands on. I have three kids 21, 16, 9. I hope you start to feel better and see a doctor about your concerns.

  • am no doctor, but lots of things can affect memory such as lack of sleep.

  • I will say its baby brain-i have 2kids same age like yours and have same problem. Maybe reading books, doing crossword or some memory app on ipad or mobile will help

  • I haven’t had this problem but l would definitely visit a doctor just for peace of mind.

  • Lack of sleep and sunshine can do a lot to our bodies. You will get sleep one day, in the meantime, try to spend some time in the afternoon sun with your kids, and get what rest you can. Outside of that, see a gp and request a blood test, that’ll tell you if you are nutrionally missing anything

  • Maybe a check up and visit to a GP?
Professional advice might be a good idea?

  • I used to have an absolutely amazing memory, both long and short term….after having my daughter, I can remember things from work 15 years ago, but husband asks me something from the week before and I am like ‘oh yeah, I forgot about that’, sometimes I have to stop and think what I am doing, walk into a room and forget what I went in for etc. Lack of sleep, carrying lots in your mind and on your plate can all attribute….couple that with children needing your time and attention and as the saying goes ‘can hardly think straight right now’. The things I used to store in my head, I now write lists (and then forget the list half the time)! When I do find spare time I try to do puzzles etc to unwind and keep my brain active thinking about other things other than home life and children. However if you are concerned and it is impacting you then see your GP….nobody should make you feel silly if you have a genuine concern you wish to voice.

  • I had this and ended up with extra testing for ms which came out negative thank goodness. My vitamin D was really low though which can lead to memory issues. My memory improved since I had some booster treatments and vitamins.
