Hello!

We live in a rental property, which gets extremely cold and the way that the house is positioned there is never good air flow. We keep the windows open all year round. Just recently we have had to have the shower removed due to tiles falling off the wall, when the builder/plumber came, the extent of the damage was severe wood rot caused by water damage and all underneath the house is mould which looks like a shower loofah. We have also started getting mould in our ceilings.

My 3 yo has just been put on 2 x puffers with a persistent cough and my 8 yo also has a persistent cough and flu-like symptoms. Both children have seen our gp but there haven’t been any real answers.

Can anyone give me advise on how mould can affect our health?

  • Not specifically, but I do know it’s a bad thing and can contribute to respiratory problems.

  • There is so much (scarey) information about this on the Internet. It’s shocking what it can do to our bodies!

  • Mould is definitely not good for you or your children’s health I would be finding another house if you could!

  • Interesting comments read, I agree don’t think mould and moisture are not good for anyone’s health.

  • I actually saw a TV story on this subject only recently and the dangers to ones health.

This is great mom90758 and really worth a read.

  • would moving house be an option?

  • yes it is so hard to get landlords to fix these things but i do think that you should try. You do need advice so contact a tenant’s agency

  • I would also get a letter from your childs doctor stating that the mould is contributing to your childs illnesss, keep a copy for yourself and give a copy to the landlord, I am sure their insurance would cover costs of this been fixed. ( well i hope so).

  • I don’t know whether using white vinegar in water would kill the mould. A strong mix of white king would but you may need to arrange for somebody to mind your children elsewhere for a few days until the smell of it goes. If oyur landlord won’t do something i won’t know if the tenancy tribunal can rule in your favour. Does the local council in your area have a health inspector you can get advice from. Is moving an option?? Are there gardens/lawns close to the house walls that may be making the problem worse? Sorry, the only suggestions I can think of.

  • Unfortunately all the owner has done is get the shower fixed and replaced some of the rotten mouldy wood in the wall. The under floor mould and ceiling mould are still the same, nothing has been done to fix it and probably won’t be done to fix it.

  • People do get ill from prolonged exposure to mould. I would be getting the owners to fix the problem ASAP.

  • Mould and moisture are definitely not good for your health and I’m sure you will find it has contributed to your children’s illnesses.
What is the owner of the house going to do about it?

  • i think that the respiratory issues could be linked to it. it isn’t good for you at all

  • We have a simular problem in our house at the moment with Black Mould, it is going through insurance to fix and is talking forever to get the approval to get it fixed ( its been 4 weeks so far). My oldest son gets asthma pretty bad when he is crook and it is ongoing at the moment, its like he has a asthma attack every night. I am wondering if this is due to the mould. My other two kids have ongoing cold like symptoms Now the insurance company have the photos of the mould we are doing our best to clean it up as it grows back quickly, sometimes with in days…. if you have acess to a ensuite i would put the shower room offlimits till you can find out
