Hello!

I have been asked to go to a dress up party in March and I have to dress up as a movie star or a musician. I am really struggling because I absolutely hate dress ups and really don’t want to go to the party. I currently hate the way I look and having to dress up is making me feel really unhappy. I don’t know what to do as I can’t tell my friend this, she will think I am pathetic so I have been googling options but just feel overwhelmed by it all. I does anyone have any cost effective dress up ideas that are practical but fun?

  • Temu is really great to get some cheap props. This kind of dress up shouldn’t be too bad because you can literally wear normal clothes if you have the right props. Like if you have a cow boy hat and some khakis and bought a cheap whip, you could be Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford. Or you could just wear a nice dress that looks stylish (op shop if you don’t have the right thing) and then just get a wig and some big glasses- you could even go as Sia as she rocks a wig and sunnies to hide her identity.

  • oh I hate these type of parties tring to make a decision of what to wear and when you do finally do decide on the outfit and you get there someone has always got the same as what you are wearing

  • You could glue a lot of crumpled paper to a swim cap, paint it all blue, and you’ve got Marge Simpson. If you have long black hair, you could go as Morticia from the Adams Family, or as Cher. You could dress as one of the ABBA ladies. A quick Google search of celebrity dress ups might give you more ideas.

  • I understand how stressful dress-up parties can be. You could go for a simple Audrey Hepburn look with a black dress and pearls, or a casual musician style with a band tee and leather jacket. Both are easy to put together and still fun.

  • Another option is to select a character from a movie or a music video clip and choose a costume. There are many movies and music video clips that use relaxed clothing and the characters are not over styled. I use wigs and wardrobe clothes to be a character; a pink wig and pink top and jacket and I have been a Pink Lady from Grease. I wore jeans, already had a pink top and jacket and borrowed a wig. It was fuss free, comfortable and cost effective.

  • Yoy don’t have to go all out, there are always some that do and some that keep it very relaxed. Don’t stress about it too much. As others have suggested you can always go as an Extra or someone dressed in everyday clothes. Movie stars do wear them. Try to enjoy it.

  • It is very important to be comfortable when going to a party and being able to dress in clothes that assist with being comfortable. Dress up and costume parties can be fun but of course they can also prove tricky and cause some anxiety when trying to find outfits that are comfortable. I have always gone with easy options. I always choose characters with relaxed clothing and that is in my wardrobe or cheap to purchase. An outback Jillaroo is still a memorable one; relaxed shirt, jeans, boots, hats and a toy horse and for another party a hippie with a free flowing maxi dress and flowers. Good luck!

  • I feel as though this is hard to answer by not personally knowing you! I think firstly you need to narrow down options of musicians or movie stars that you like. After doing this, you could then rephrase your question and ask for suggestions on how to simply and cost effectively dress as this person! I think that would make it much easier because then it would be narrowed down but also still have enough options of what version of this person you could dress as. Whereas right now it might be too broad to help with! 😊

  • I don’t know your personal style, but I would try to find a celeb that matches your esthetic that wouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable to dress like. Even if it’s just throwing on a cute wig or doing your make up a little differently. If it’s going to stress you out too much maybe be honest with your friend. I’m sure they care for you and won’t tear into you.
