Hello!

I’m looking for some delicious family meals to cook and freeze in advance for busy days. Something abit different to just spaghetti bolognaise or a casserole? Thanks in advance.

  • of course a bolognese, lasagna and slow cooked chicken dish.

  • Lasagne, Canneloni, Mexican bean chilli and sausage rolls/pies are my go to meals.

  • I love to make curries and freeze them. Butter chicken, korma, chic pea and potato, and panang are favourites in my house.

  • Chilli Con carne, chicken curry, soup

  • Stroganoff can seem very different from a standard stew just by the addition of something creamy – serve with green/string-beans or rice or mash

  • Pinterest has heaps of ideas. My personal favourite is doing up a big batch of slow cooked shredded beef, then freezing in family sized portions. Can use as is with salad or veggies, on burgers, nachos, enchiladas… very versatile.

  • Whoops I pressed enter below too quickly! Anyway I use my slow cooker almost weekly, soups vegetable carries and butter chicken are my faves to freeze leftovers.

  • I use my slow cooker almost

  • Bolognese sauce, simply because it is so versatile. You can have it with pasta, make some jacket potatoes or turn it into chilli con carne, just to name a few.

  • Butter chicken is my family favourite.

  • Most risottos freeze well. Home made sausage rolls and quiches are also good.

  • Soups and pasta sauces, pizza are a few.

  • The first thing I would do is take a small notebook, or just pen and paper, and see what you can buy. I have just bought quite a lot, as may be in hospital before long, and husband no no can cook. I have bought and covered one shelf, in the freezer, with lots that are around, plus put bread into packets of two for him to use. I also bought different types of soup in packets for him to heat. Found at present our coles has reduced in price a “menu” brand and bought some of those as well. Mvvans bought out some and I purchased a roast beef set up . Now I am not saying you need to buy, even though I did but it would give you ideas. I also bought one that has mini meatballs and spag.( so to be different.) I think you would find aldi, iga coles and woolworths all have different that you could make note of and do at home… My neighbour used to go away for a month at a time, and I fed her dog.. she used to cook everything up and put it into chinese takeaways read y to go for him. All stored in a small deep freeze where dog cou ld not get to, but I cou ld. Hope that helps a bit.

  • They are about my standard go to as well.

  • As you say, stews and casseroles are amazing meals to cook ahead and freeze. Soups are great too, as is Chilli con carne, lasagne, gnocchi, dumplings, curry, pies or sausage rolls, all manner of pasta sauces, potato or pasta bakes, risotto, tuna mornay or quiche – all simple to prepare and cook and delicious through the week with veggies or salad!

  • Stirfry’s freeze well and you can vary the meat and veggies.

  • Maybe join on online site – I belong to a few and they give good tips on saving food and freezing food. Find one that suits you and your style of cooking.

  • We tend to do things that are seasonal with our veggie garden. Over summer we did a lot of zucchini slice, bolognaise sauce, tomato soup, minestrone soup. Quiche is a good one too.

  • You could cook big batches of brown rice and then freeze it in individual packages ready for use. Or any other grain that is healthy but takes long to cook.

  • I always make extra when I cook and freeze everything and anything – most food freezes well. Maybe experiment a little with different recipes and foods.
