Hello!

Hi, first school camp
Helicopter mum here, stressing about shower at school camp. What do I instruct my child to bring when going to shower? Stressing about germs, I don’t want my child dropping towel or anything on floor etc…
Is it change in room into a dressing gown, then shower, then get into pjs in room?

  • Oh, I totally get the worry! For your child’s first school camp shower, here’s what I’d suggest:

Shower Caddy: Pack a little caddy with soap, shampoo, and a washcloth. It keeps things organized and easy to carry.

Towels: Bring two towels-one for the shower and one for drying off. Quick-dry ones are great for camp!

Dressing Gown: Have them wear a dressing gown or a big t-shirt to the shower. It keeps them covered and makes it easy to change back into PJs afterward.

Flip-Flops: Don’t forget some flip-flops for the shower. It’s all about keeping those little feet safe from germs!

  • Always take thongs and wear them in the shower and hopefully the camp is set up with an area to put their clothes and towels and things. I wouldn’t stress too much as children are very hardy and kids have been going to camps without any issues for many decades. Try not to worry x

  • If you’re worried about germs, wearing thongs in public showers is always a good idea. Other than that, pack a little toiletry bag with some soap, a washer, etc. and I would usually take in a towel and PJs, underwear into the cubicle and get changed there. I mean it’s a personal preference, but in public I would rather not be naked under a dressing gown!

  • Bring a spare towel just in case and definitely wear crocs or sandals in the shower

  • I made my girls pack thongs to wear in the shower area for hygiene and extra clothes 2xper day due to school outdoor activities.Hooe this helps

  • The school should send a note home to say of what to bring surely or dont they do that now
my kids always had notes sent home to tell us what not pack and what to pack its just a guideline
so maybe ask the school or teacher

  • I didn’t even consider the factors the below comment has pointed out. The ultra muck avoidant me would want to advise on a routine to my child, but then they are the one kid looking frantic following steps you’ve outlined. As long as they keep thongs on to avoid any skin issues, let them be a bit yucky. Give them a canvas bag to throw dirty clothes in to keep it seperate to save clean up once home.

  • Provided that you supply all the items on the list the school gives you, then I would my child just follow the rest of the kids and do the same as they are doing. If you instruct your child to do something out of the norm it is very likely that teasing will begin making a very uncomfortable time for all.

  • Oh ok, yes list says
    Dressing gown or tracksuit
I assume to wear to showers…..

  • Must of the time school will provide an exact list of what to bring. My kids always brought a pair of thongs for under the shower and simple tow bag to carry towel, clothing and toilet bag with the needed toileteries in. Most showers have a hook so the tow bag can be hung whilst showering and things stay dry

  • I wouldnt instruct them in any way. Just let them follow the way that the others are doing things. If your child changes into a robe in the room and walks that way to the showers and no one else does then its likely some kid will decide to tease them over it and turn it into a big deal.

  • Definitely agree with the below comment, a pair of bathroom thongs for them to wear in the shower and bathrooms. Hooded towels are great, especially if they have to be in a large change room rather than a cubicle. A toiletry bag with their bathroom items, with a handle if available so they can hang it. Kmart has great waterproof pouches or a large dry bag in the camping section. I would avoid dressing gown in the bathrooms, as they are bulky and in my experience the first thing to fall on the floor or the tie flopping down. I would suggest dry and pjs in the bathroom with thongs on, then dry feet and get comfy once back in the room. You could always pack some extra sandwich bags for the toothbrush (and keep liquids from spilling).

  • Every school will run this very differently and it would be best to check with the teachers or the admin staff at the school. I would highly recommend your child wear thongs in the shower and perhaps take a towel that is a hooded towel if possible. I would also recommend buying a cheap draw string water proof bag for her to take her towel etc in to leave in should there not be anywhere dry for her to leave it that way it will stay dry and be kept in a clean bag.
