Hello!

Hi mums, I am 13 weeks pregnant and haven’t had a ultrasound yet. I have decided not to get the one to test for down syndrome though. Has anyone else not had their first ultrasound until 19 weeks? Everything seems to be going great apart from the nausea :)

  • I suppose the downs test is really a check in to make sure everything is on track. I suppose if your blood tests are ok and you’re still nauseous (yes, that’s a good sign the hormones are doing the right thing) then have it at 19 weeks. Good luck!

  • I got the down syndrome test just so I could have an ultrasound, I was just nervous until I could see Bub myself

  • Hello you probably had your bub by now. The way it was presented to me was – would I terminate if there was an issue? For me the answer was no so a scan earlier than 19wks was irrelevant. My sister said i was crazy but each to their own

  • a lot of people just have the downs ultrasound and blood test for two reasons one to find out if there are any issues etc. The other is to veiw the bubs thats the main reason i had mine. Also its really just personal choice if people have the ultra sound. For me i have made the decision to have them but not to rely on the results due to my first child having issues that should of been picked up in the ultra sound but were not. (issues other that downs).

  • I didnt have my first ultra sound till 20weeks, nor did I get the down syndrome test, IF you feel fine, it should all be fine

  • if it is all going well, they won’t ask you to do one

  • It’s your personal choice and I think what you are saying is you’ll keep bubs and love him/her as much as any other child and keep bubs regardless of downs syndrome or not but i’d take the extra scan just for peace of mind or in case there is an issue, better to know now than find out at 19 weeks, your choice though, just sharing my opinion.

  • i have always had a dating scan first at around 9 weeks :)

  • If there are no concerns and you are not gettign the down syndrome test I would worry as the 12 weeks is just a dating scan

  • I had the dating ultrasound at 8 weeks which confirmed the proper age of my baby and the due date

  • It’s so exciting seeing bubs for the first time, it makes it feel so much more real!!!
I was so excited when I was told that I get an extra one at 32 weeks, can’t wait!!!

  • If all is going well, hang out until the 19 week one. You will know a lot more then. The ones before that don’t look at as much stuff. Good luck!

  • If your feeling good it is totally up to you and what you want!

For us we were high risk pregnancy and so we had stacks of ultrasounds with the FMU (Fetal Medicine Unit) at the Canberra Hospital. Ultrasounds at week 8, 12, 15, 18, 24, 26, 30, 34 for my 5th and 6th Pregnancy. This was because we have had a stillborn and 4 miscarriages, placenta previa, short cervix and wanting to go into labour early with most of my pregnancies and they wanted to keep an eye on my bubs.

  • Yeah that’s pretty normal. I had one both pregnancies at 12, 18, and 36 weeks. Of course you can request more if your willing to pay for them, but medically that’s all they do. I would definitely talk to your doctor about it and especially the scan at 12 weeks, there are a range of different things they check for at this stage, not just Down syndrome.

  • Wow Cinta, you certainly did get a surprise lol! Did you kind of suspect yourself before the ultrasound that you were having twins?

  • We had our ultrasounds during the 13 week mark just to check that all was well. Then at 19-20 week and then at 36 week and that was pretty normal for most of my friends. I suggest you ask you local GP they will be happy to write a referral for you you don’t have to wait for your Gyno.

  • The twelve week ultrasound checks for a lot of things, not just Down’s syndrome. I’d suggest you talk to a doctor or nurse about your decision.

  • Not sure why you don’t want one until then, but everyone is different. I loved being able to see bub on screen and I always think if they find a problem with any test there is more chance of things being ok if found earlier.

  • You can get the 12 week ultrasound without having the blood test for Down’s syndrome. I didn’t want the test with both my girls, so I just told my ob. that’s what I wanted. The 12 week scan helps to determine your EDD & check everything else is OK

  • My first and 2nd were scanned at 12 weeks.
My 3rd was 12 weeks, 14 weeks, 16 weeks, 18 weeks, and 20 weeks…due to a problem and concerns over her health…all worked out in the end :)
