Hello!

I have recently had to talk to my 4yo about death of a pet and grandparent. Just wondering if there are great books to support my little one asking so many questions. Thanks

  • That’s a good question and some great answers here. I recently had to try to explain to my 6, 4 and 2 year old about the death of a grandparent and it’s so hard

  • Ida, Always. You can watch the story being told on youtube here;

  • Head off to your local library together. There’s bound to be some reading material on these subjects there. And it’s also a great place to spend time together

  • ask at your local library as they are usually really good at making suggestions and recommendations

  • i will have to look myself

  • I don’t know of any myself, but I am sure there would be some somewhere

  • I work in a book store and we have a children’s section dedicated to “issues”, such as grief, divorce, etc .I will see what we have and post some titles for you :)

  • Tough Boris by Mem Fox is about a pirate whose parrot dies.
I will not ever never forget you nibbles by Lauren Child is a Charlie and Lola book about a pet mouse dying.
    Lifetimes by Bryan Mellonie

  • My daughter is 5 and talks about death a lot and I try to talk to her and Explain heaven, but picture books can be a good idea.

  • I would try your local book shop. They seem to have a wide range of categories. :-)

  • I find the library a great place to start, a difficult topic at times. Hope you find what you’re after :)

  • If you have the time it can be effective to make your own story. Just use some pictures and photos and you can personalise the message you want to give your child. Sorry about your loss

  • the ABC shop has a fabtastic range of kids books dealing with all sorts of subjects. You can order online too

  • I read ‘Grandpa’ by John Burningham a few years ago and it was a good book that handled the topic quite sensitively.

  • Yes, there are a lot. Check out your local library – I know ours has heaps. There is one called “I Miss You” A first look at death, and also “I miss my pet”. “Wishes for one more day” is another about Grandparents.

  • Ive actually never seen a book to help explain this. All I can say is each person handles death different to each other. Show your emotions and remind them, its ok to be sad or angry – this is all a part of the grieving process and we all grieve different to the next. I tell my kids that Nanna is in Heaven, jumping in the clouds laughing and having a good time. One her Birthday and the day she was taken from us, we light a candle and we talk about it all the time. I think you explaining the way you believe is better than any book written, don’t you?

  • It’s so hard explaining the these things to your children :-(

  • Sesame Street offer a range of good books and also a video series. Many aren’t available in Australia but can be ordered from the US.

  • My local library has a child section on that subject.

  • Ask your librarian. They would be more than happy to point you in the right direction!
