Hi everyone, I am after some Australian dishes to serve at Harmony Day for my sons school but I was after things to are not the norm. Any suggestions? I was thinking Cheese and Vegemite Scrolls.

  • An Indigenous Australian recipe like Bush tomato (akudjura) Scones might also be a nice idea. These scone makes for a perfect savoury afternoon snack. Bush tomato is a small native berry, when dried it has caramel-like flavour and slightly tangy acidity.

  • Anzac biscuits are typical Australian and nice to present too

  • Some nice ideas ! I would do either some kind of Australian food (like your suggestion of cheese and vegemite scrolls) or some kind of orange food (for example an all orange fruit platter)

  • rainbow cake

  • Australian food is definitely tricky! Its when we realise how culturally diverse our origins are! Cheese and vegemite scrolls are a great idea, MIni Pavlovas, meat pies & lamingtons too.

  • the scrolls sound really good!

  • Try the following, as you can vary the ingredients to suit the taste buds and preferences of both kiddies and adults …

    SAVOURY BACON SLICES

    1 loaf sliced bread
    250 gm Cheese (grated)
    375 gm Bacon Pieces
    1 medium Onion
    1 Egg
    pinch Salt
    pinch Black Pepper
    pinch Cayenne Pepper
    1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
    1/2 cup Tomato Sauce
    – Place bread slices on over trays. Mix all other ingredients together in a bowl, the spread on bread slices. Bake in a 180 degree Celsius oven until bread is brown on the bottom. Do not overcook, or slices will dry out When cooked, cut each slice into six pieces. Serve hot or cold.

  • Try this recipe that I put on this page. The pasties are delicious served hot or cold, you could make them in “mini” sizes, and they’re loved by children & adults alike.

  • they sound like a nice different dish

  • so many finger foods idea in cooking section too

  • there are some good comments here

  • Mini bolognaise sauce pies might be nice.

  • What about a traditional damper? SOOOOO easy to make!

  • Mini pavlovas? How about fruit skewers?

  • at our school harmony day is orange day and everything is orange. so cupcakes with orange icing etc.

  • honey flavoured log cake with choc icing and pipe some little ants for the “ants on a log cake”

    Umm a koala cake
    Kangaroo cake

  • pineapple upside down cake.

  • Thanks guys, I know it is a hard one! Thanks for all your tips though. I love the dips idea!

  • how about mars bar slice or tim tam cake/cheesecake, nutella swirls or anzac cookies with a dob of nutella and a chocolate freckle on top.

  • why not some a plate of dips using different aussie vegetables
eg beetroot , carrot spinach and cheese some thing like that would be fun
