Yes I have. First time when I was single in 1989 (had to look that up lol). And in 2018 we went with all our family to Africa (to visit my sister who lives there). It was a great experience for the kids to see the wildlife, something they won’t forget quickly !
My friend took her family on an African Safari – at the Pilanesberg National Park which is almost certainly the most accessible and family-friendly safari destination on the whole African continent, an easy 2 hours drive from Johannesburg and an hour and a half from Pretoria.
There’s a range of very affordable accommodation inside the park including self-catering chalets that can sleep up to 5, and even the cheapest lodges and camps have swimming pools and kiddies playgrounds. Most of the accommodations are fenced so you won’t get any unwanted visitors stalking your little ones either.
No, but have friend who went about 20 years ago. Camped – with wild animals about – so really don’t leave the guarded area! African townships were also ‘rough’ with people employed to guard the shop doors at night, armed with clubs, pretty scary but I guess things may have got better decades on!
It was a few years ago, but I loved it. I didn’t have anything pre-booked, but if travelling with kids I would probably do so. Kruger National Park is amazing and you can just hire your own car and camp in the camp grounds. The Serengeti was amazing and Ngora Ngora Crater was amazing. We went with guide that we just organised over there for that one in Tanzania.
