Hello!

My doctor has recommended that I get an IUD and recommended the Mirena one in particular. Has anyone had one of these before and did you feel any discomfort when it was inserted? Was there any lasting discomfort? Do you feel any discomfort or pain when having sex? Did it lessen your period bleed amount?

  • I have no personal experience, but I know a couple of my friends had poor experiences. I’m not in a position to give medical advice, but did you and your doctor discuss other options? I’m always a little wary of putting things into my body unless they’re really necessary, so I’d ask about options.

  • I haven’t personally had one but I have been told I should get one.
I too looked into it and decided against it. I guess it depends on what you want it for. If it’s for iron loss and heavy bleeding it will probably help but if it’s for hormonal issues it won’t help at all. My sister got one and said it was very Painful for her being inserted she then said she could feel it all the time and then a few weeks to a month later it fell out in the toilet so she went and had it redone.
Her first period was light but lasted weeks!
Now she says it’s barely there and finds it okays
Personally that possibility of pain and discomfort is not for me.

  • I’ve never had one but had a friend that had a lot of menstrual issues. She went with the Mirena and it didn’t help her. She found it uncomfortable and had it removed.

  • No i havent had an IUD before but i know people that have and havent really mentioned anything about it too uncomfortable. Sometimes you can get numbing stuff beforehand but it’s usually ok once in. Good luck on your journey and hope you find the answers you are looking for here!

  • I had one put in a few years ago and it’s been the best thing I ever did. After about 3mths I stopped getting my period which is great for me. I had no pain at all on insertion but I have had 3 kids so that can make it easier to insert. I did have slight cramping for a few days but less than I would have for my period. It seems to be one of those things though where some people I know have had a horrible experience with side effects and had to get it removed and others love it. Seems to affect everyone differently but my experience has been nothing but positive.

  • My SIL had one a few years ago and it worked well for her. Slight discomfort at the time of getting it in, some light bleeding and cramping for a few days, but then it worked really well and wasn’t noticeable. I don’t believe she had too much of a difference in periods.
