Hello!

Hi! I’m planning on making a potted fairy garden for my little girls 3rd bday & I’ve never done anything like it before & I especially know nothing about plants. Does anyone have any suggestions, or things to avoid? TIA!

  • Check out pinterest for heaps on inspiration. I especially like the ones using broken pots and mini succulents. They are so effective

  • I would have no idea, would never have though of this myself. But I would suggest looking online for inspiration

  • Collect pretty rocks shells ornaments ,fairies, butterflies, have different coloured pots with different colours ,put cute ornaments in various plants.I have little frogs in some of mine. Some pretty pots of flowers as well.Anything pretty.

  • The first thing that comes to mind for a fairy garden is those toadstools, the red ones with white spots. Next, I think of little fairy cabins. Plants, I have no idea about, except for a daisy ring

  • Gardening centres are a good idea as well for things to get!

  • You could use you existing lawn, use a circle and path of small pebbles or or rocks (easy to pick up afterwards so you don’t have flying stones when cutting your lawn) and put small potplants around the outside with small flowering plants in them (or containers of flowers sitting in them). If you have trees or shrubs nearby you could hang strips of coloured paper with glitter or small dots of other colour on them

  • This is a cute (and great) idea! I’m sorry I can’t give you any ideas to help but I would try Pinterest. Everything is on Pinterest!

  • That’s a great idea I’m sure she will love it! There are so many ways to put one together and it all depends on what size you want, where you are wanting to keep it.
I have made a few now for boys and girls and the options of what you can put in them are endless. A simple one to do with a small shallow round or oval pot is to use a top quality potting mix, as the pot is small it will dry out fast. I used mondo grass to form a hedge along a path made of tiny pebble with a sprinkling of coloured sand. The fairy house was a the end of the path (plastic cup with the door cut out and covered the outside with stones using a hot glue gun) a pansy, viola and lobelia was planted like a cottage garden on one side. I then bagged up a few small figurines of fairies and frogs, birds pebbles etc so that she could place them around wherever she wanted once she received it and it was a piece that could easily be altered if a plant died off or just change was wanted.
When I’m worried about using potting mix for a child I make an ‘indoor’ fairy garden where I substitute the soil for pebbles, shells etc as the plants I use are airplants so they do not need soil. Just a location with a good amount of filtered light and a small spritz of water every now and then.

  • also you can buy these cute little grasses. i did a fairy garden and in the long run, one type of flower and the grass was durable. Get cute wishing stones (glass marble stones) and make a path. Sprinkle with dry, loose glitter

  • A cute idea is a tyre swing from a toy car hung from a branch

  • Loved Blondie’s answer! We’ve also made a fairy house out of a plastic garden pot, by cutting out an arch for a door and gluing on plastic flowers.

  • I did one for my little girl and she loved it. Moss is a great plant to use, little stones you can buy in little bags and different colours, miniature evergreens, lavender, fairy vine, miniature roses, woolly or creeping thyme, miniature daisies, dwarf grasses…just ask as your local garden centre or Bunnings. If you want furniture you can sometimes buy them from garden stores or make your own.
There are a lot of fairy garden ideas on the net…google some to get an idea and then form your own. Good luck and have fun!
