Hello!

I’m deciding which career path to take. I have my dream career in mind but no experience on the job. How did you decide which path to take?

  • It was kind of accidental for me – I took a job, intending to use it for a year or so till I decided what I wanted to do long term. And it turned out to be a perfect fit, long term career for me.

  • I made my decision build on skills and chances available. Without experience things are possible too !

  • Choosing a career is generally based on the skills and personality you have. You look at what your strengths are and use them to choose such as being caring lends itself to a role in nursing, working in aged care. Communication skills ie are you good at talking to people and listening. A good career counsellor will help you identify where your skills are.

  • I just sort of fell into them but then worked further snd did more training to get further.
my current job , I had no experience but did a course and lots of training and I now have a qualification for the rest of my life

  • Jobs have found me and I have liked all of them! :)

  • I fell into my job so to speak. It was a part time summer job after yr 12 and it just stuck. If you know what you want to do then just pursue it. Do a course or get work experience. Whatever it takes to get you into the field of work you want and work your way up!

  • I combined my education and my hobbies and I couldn’t be happier

  • I’m 36 and still searching. My love is teaching and just can’t afford to go back and do my masters of teaching now.

  • this is a hard one – I tried a few things until I found what I really wanted to do and now at 33 with 3 children I’m studying graduate teaching . be prepared to start at the bottom and take any opportunities for training you can. think about what kinds of jobs might give you the skills for your dream career – remember you can study and retrain at any age this year so if you start down one path and it doesn’t feel right you can veer in another direction. good luck!!

  • maybe get some work experience to make sure that this is what you want to do. Talk to other people who work in that industry and see what you can find out online in terms of people’s opinions. People will be talking about their jobs on some forum

  • I still haven’t, trial and error, and just keep going until your happy!
Don’t spend you life in a job you hate.
For me i like jobs for a year or so and i need to move to something new.
So instead of finding the “Perfect career” I just don’t beat myself up and just keep my options open.
I always say, find a job/s you love (whether its a temporary thing or long term) and you never work a day in your life :)
