Hello!

Hi Mums, I suffer from dry eyes, they swell up and are very dry and irritated and also red at times. The drops that you get from the chemist only work for a little while, please mums does any one know of a home made remedy that may help me? My eyes are driving me crazy.

  • And even Coles and Woolworths sell eyedrops !

  • I talked about it with my optometrist and she suggested eye drops which you can just at he chemist

  • I always pop on teabags and have a rest, also hydrate.

  • Sounds like hay fever! Get a good dose of claratyne into you daily!! Will help the issues with your eyes and keep up the eye drops too

  • I have these amazing wipes from opsm – they are really good and easy to carry around. not as volatile as an eye drop or as invasive… wish you well

  • Do you get dry mouth as well? If so please go get a blood test for sjogrens. It may be nothing but it won’t hurt to check.

  • I don’t think dry eyes should be so red, I have extremely dry eyes, I’ve ended up at a specialist, I had duct plugs put into but they fell out eventually due to my insistent rubbing my eyes due to other allergies.

The allergy eye drops I use have an antihistamine in them Naphcon-A

For my dry eye problem, the specialist said eye drops will do nothing for it. You need to use the Eye Gels, and Viscotears was recommended. (I have to put them in every 2-3 hours)
When I was pregnant, due to the hormones my dry eyes became really bad and I had to put an eye ointment in for overnight (because everything is so blurry once you put it in) (recommended by my optometrist)

    hope this helps

  • Hi I think you might need an allergy test. My 9 yr old son suffers bad hayfever and dry eyes is one of his main symptoms. His is relieved by polaramine (antihestimene) and eye drops that come in a clear bottle with red label.

  • I get severe Dry Eye also and i found that “Systane Balance” Eye Drops really help me. Pick up from any Chemist or Spectacle places. They may be the ones you already use but if not, give that a go. Good luck. I know how annoying this can be

  • thankyou there are some wonderful ideas here… now I a off to try a few now as my eyes are driving me nuts today.

  • Some people put slices of cucumber over their closed eyes to relieve the puffiness.
If you use a heater(especially gas) in Winter, put an open container of water in the room, preferably near your heater above tghe reach of little fingers. You will find the air isn’t as dry and the water will gradually evaporate. Before we started doing that I also often woke up the next morning with a sore throat. In the Summer when you have airconditioning on the water will evaporate too, even if it isn’t a ducted one but is one in the wall. There are many types of eye drops, some better than others. Some you need a prescription for. I also like others suggest you seek advice in case there is a definite cause for it. It may be a hayfever type reaction to something you use a lot, something outdoors etc.

  • A visit to an optometrist might be a good idea as sometimes there is an underlying reason for dry and swollen eyes.

  • Dry eyes are a common annoyance. The eye drops only temporarily relieve the problem. Avoid extreme temperatures, air conditioning, protect your eyes with sunglasses.

  • I dont know if this will work but put cold tea bags on your eyes with a cold face washer over the top. Hopefully that will relieve them. Do you get headaches? i suffer from bad headaches and i get bloodshot eyes days at a time as a result.
