Hello!

My 7 month old is a great sleeper during the day (2 x 2hr + 1 x 45m sleeps during the day) but when he goes to bed at 7pm (ish), he only ever sleeps for 45 mins. He then wakes up full of energy and it takes me 1.5 hrs to get him back to sleep. I’ve resorted to getting him up at 8pm to wear him out, give him a feed at 9.30pm and then back to bed (where he thankfully sleeps through until 7am).

He started on solids about a month ago and has just started meats. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very thankful he sleeps through overnight, but I’d much prefer it if he went down at 7pm and stayed down (happy to give him his dream feed at 10pm ish). Any suggestions?

  • Is there any change you could cut out that last nap time…the 4pm one?
Maybe let him play a little longer, then give him his solids followed by his bath and then bed at around 6.30-7pm. He may sleep through a little better for you. By the time my son turned 1, he wouldn’t have any naps at all!

  • Thx for the questions, happy to provide the answers to dig deeper!

He has done the same thing for months – even before we started solids. I was hoping the solids would fill him up so he’d sleep better.

His last nap is roughly 4:15-5pm when he gets up and has his solids, bath, play, breastfeed and by this time, it’s close to 7pm and he’s ready for bed (tired signs). So 7pm is both – he’s ready for bed by that time and it’s around the time I want him to go to bed.

When he wakes after 45mins (or so), he’s raring to go again. I’ve tried feeding him but he either won’t take the breast (so I fight him for an hour, he finally takes it but then ages to resettle) or he might take the breast but take over an hour to resettle (hence why we’ve resorted to getting him up to wear himself out).

Do you think maybe I have to try harder to push thru the whingey tired signs @ 7 to give him longer to digest the solids?
(Incidentally, all other solids at other meal times (bfast & lunch) are given approx 1/2 hr after breastfeed)

  • Are you demand or timed feeding? Has this sleeping pattern only started since you introduced meats? Is he really ready to go down at 7.00 or is that when you prefer him to go to bed? How long after he finishes solids etc. are you putting him down? We found that they need longer before they are drowsy after eating solids and started to digest them. These are just ideas from our past experience.

  • Does he go back to sleep straight away if you feed him again? Or he is just ready to go!? I am sure he will grow out of it. My 8montb old wakes for feeds during the night but usually goes straight back down after a bottle. Cheeky little monkeys!
