Hello!

My toddler likes to randomly shout gibberish to other children and the poor kids do nothing but look at me.
My toddler refuses nappy change time to the point there’s crying and kicking. I try sing something but it doesn’t work. What do you recommend?

  • Distraction is always a great way to get the kids engaged into cooperating with you. I had a portable little radio and I would turn it on and give it to my son only when we were changing nappies. Over time I used different things like Matchbox Cars and new little books. I had a stash in a bag and I’d bring out a treat and he loved having his nappy changed then. I also bought a rotating night light that was a great distraction (these are cheap lights that throw shadows onto the ceiling are available from Kmart).

  • I can relate. My toddler hit a point where he didn’t want to lay on his back unless it was absolutely his idea, which was never for a nappy change. What helped were the Spot flip the flap books. They are small enough so could hold them above his face and still use the flaps. Now if he’s getting impatient I sing the ABC’s and he loves it. He’s very much in the excited, loud gibberish phase and there’s not much I can do but redirect him. He’s a very energetic dude who gets so excited around other kids

  • The Happy Song by Imogen was literally designed to ‘delight’ 6 month olds to 2 year olds by developmental psychologists! It works a charm on my 2yo and 4yo and has since my youngest was a couple of weeks old. Even when they hurt themselves I sing it without all the extra noises and it stimulates the same effect noe that they know the song. I have even used this in medical scans where my bub needed to be held down to not move. And I take any opprotuntiy to pair with kisses and cuddles and I love you’s.
