They will have to getover it.

My sister has a tradition of celebrating my nieces birthday with her school friends on the same birth date ie 27 Dec but the month before ie 27 Nov (now going on celebrating 10 years this way). At home, she always packs the Christmas decorations away and puts up birthday decorations.

We celebrate family and friends with December birthdays separately as they definitely can be overshadowed.

I have two nephews, a sister and my husband all in December. My nephews are 4 & 6 and we make sure they have their own day, it was the same when my sister was growing up. My husband is on the 20th December but we always go to dinner or lunch and he always has a day doing what he wants. I know when he was smaller people would give my husband birthday/Christmas presents as one gift but I make sure they are celebrated seperate.

Our Christmas tree goes up on the first of December so my son whos birthday is on the 10th of December gets a full day of deciding what he wants to do, excepting any pre-made plans to get friends to meet up and play. This year we took him to the park, he got to choose the snacks, the cake, and how long we spent there. when we got home he got to choose what everyone ate for dinner and what time to go to bed.

My tips: are to keep a record of the amount of money spent on other siblings (Jan-Nov) and make sure this is spent on the December child as well. If the December child’s birthday is very close to Christmas Day and the home is decorated for the festive season take the child to a park for a picnic special birthday celebration, you could even decorate the back yard in birthday banners and balloons and celebrate there. A birthday is a special and unique time of year and it needs that little extra special touch. Wishing your girls fun and wonderful birthday wishes.

Christmas can indeed overshadow a December birthday. But for kids it’s important to celebrate their special day. Waiting to put up the Christmas tree could function, at least for the kids born before Christmas Day and not between Christmas and New Year.
