Hello!

“Hi! Just wanting some advice please. We have a 10 month old and 2 year old and thankfully we have never dealt with gastro before but my husband has just had it during the week and I had it last night so there’s a chance the kids might also get it and I’d like to be prepared in case. With regards to the actual bodily fulids (vomit and diarrehea) what do you do with such little children who can’t really warn you or get to a toilet/bucket on time? How do we stop it from going everywhere and what is others experiences? Thank you annon.” How do you deal with kids with gastro?

  • Oh and I have always Hydralyte at home, just in case

  • Cuddles, buckets, plenty of clean nappies, plenty of water when tolerated, hand soaking and scrubbing and thank God for the washing machine ! Little ones can dehydrate quickly, go to the Gp when you feel concerned.

  • cuddles, buckets, love and patience. good luck, it is a challenging parental right of passage!

  • Patience!! Plenty of hand washing. Regular nappy changes and towels and plenty of washing as small children vomit anywhere.

  • Although the question was posted a few years ago, just thought I would post my tips…. My 2nd child used to get gastro a lot when she was 1, and we used to just make sure we either had a bucket or towel nearby. We would eventually work out when she would vomit as she would either start coughing or gag and that’s when we would grab the bucket/ towel. Most times we were able to catch it in time. Ensure they are getting enough fluids and if they can stomach it some plain food like toast. If you can get the hydra lite ice blocks, they work really well too. Your 2 year old would be able to have them, but just check with the pharmacist if the 10 month old can too.

  • Hydralyte to keep the fluids up. Unfortunately not much you can do about the nappies.. You can try a larger size nappy but even they will leak because of the runny poo.

  • they are probably both in nappies so should be fine there, as for the vomiting I would keep a bucket handy and if you see signs hold the bucket under the 2 yr olds chin

  • You wish your husband good luck and go stay with a girlfriend.

  • as long as they are not dehydrated, gastro needs to run its course

  • plenty of fluids and washing hands with disinfectant

  • My boys had a talent for throwing up on me, so shower! Now they are older they usually make it to the bathroom. I find after/during they throw up put them in a warm shower. Freshens them up and helps them feel better.
    Hydrolyt helps too.
I always use the BRAT diet if they are really sick,

    Banana
    Rice
    Apple
    Toast

Basic foods that don’t upset the tummy. Getting them to keep something down helps.

  • I ment that’s a tough one. Silly auto correct

  • Towels, towels, towels! I’ve never had to deal with gastro but a friend and her one year old had it recently and she said they went through soooo many towels

  • Lots of towels, rest and icypoles

  • That’s a tough me. My daughter wouldn’t let me near her when it was happened. Hence a big mess they don’t understand

  • it’s going around here ATM. Just crossing my fingers

  • Wash your hands with dettol hand wash and use dettol antibacterial wipes.

  • they should drink plenty of fluids, plenty of rest don’t worry about food for a few days as it seems to irritate them even more

  • Plenty of fluids and hydralite iceblocks are fantastic – if it gets too severe you can get over the counter medicines to help, depending on childrens ages of course (I cant remember off the top of my head the ages they are suitable for)

  • Definitely as previously suggested keep up the fluids if you think the kids may get sick, and try to cut down on/eliminate acidy foods if possible. If they do get sick, acid coming back up will make it so much worse.
