Hello!

Trying to wean off breast milk. Tried 3 different formulas. Bub increases spit up/ vomits, tummy pains/ very gassy and also some constipation. Dr said to keep trying on one formula because bub needs to get use to it but for how long? We’ve been on one for 2 weeks now.

  • We use nan optipro which was also recommended by the hospitals and seems to be ok so far. Maybe check with the doctors if there are any sensitive ones you can try?

  • We tried Karrikare based on recommendations from my husbands “dads support group” (his work colleagues), but one day we changed to S26 as it was a fair bit cheaper… our baby was so constipated and when she finally did poop she was screaming (abt 5 mths old here) and her poop felt rock hard, we had to gently ease it out and put cream on her bum… that’s when we changed straight back to the karicare. But the transition from breast to karicare was quite simple and easy. There were no issues

  • My son was on karicare and it caused him to cry and scream after every feed. I even felt it gave him colic. Moving to Nan Comfort my life has never been easier. It’s so digestible and soft on the stomach. He really benefited from the change.

  • Sounds like it doesn’t agree with child. Your child should be able to keep milk down, not spit it up, no rashes ect. You could keep trying different formula till you find one that works. If not you can get dairy from eggs yogurt cheese ect

  • You will know when a formula suits your baby. I don’t agree with the doctor saying that your baby has to get used to one that is making bub not too good.

When my son was a baby, formula didn’t agree. Doctor gave scripts for Soya milk. I see that it is now possible to buy so many different ones in store, could be worth a try.

  • I’d be lost too if I had to make the decision again. There are so many products out now. I think that no matter which brand or type you choose, when you go from breastfeeding to formula there is always going to be a transition of discomfort for your baby. Maybe look for one gentle on the stomach then choose what you want from there. Be aware that some brands are often sold out, and hard to come by. So unless there is a specific health concern, I would stick to brands that are always available as swapping and changing constantly may not be good for bubs.

  • I tried a few different formulas under the nurses suggestion due to my son always being unsettled or spewing up his bottles and nothing agreed until I tried aptimal ar (anti reflux) was I tried this everything stopped and he was a different bub.

  • You will know when you find the right one. My older 3 had s26 gold and when my fourth came along we went with that. By 2 weeks old he was constipated so changed to the s26 delicteez (unsure of correct spelling there) and instantly better. Found out that he needs to have more whey product in his formula to suit his tummy. Good luck ????????

  • I think if you’re worried about the reaction they’re having to it, might be better to either try a smaller gradual change or find a new formula.

  • I think 2 weeks on a formula is enough to tell if there is a problem. They need 3-7 days and then switch if you need to.

  • I would swap to different one if your baby sounds like is in pain and uncomfortable.

  • My second bub had a reaction to Nan formula. He started off with S26 in the hospital but we had given our first Nan so decided to keep it the same rather than buying two different formulas but each time he’d have the Nan he would get diarrhoea so we had to get S26.

  • Try weaning the formula changes, I found that didn’t make my daughter as sick. If you have your own milk supply left over do a half and half with that and the formula to get bub used to it.

  • Usually know within a couple of days with loose smelly poo and sometimes baby crying with stomache pains that it’s not right for bub. I would go see child health nurse and see what they advise to try.

  • Have you tried baby on a reflux formula? That’s kind of weird that the doctor said to keep trying and baby needs to get used to it?!? I understand getting used to using a bottle and different teets but not when babys vomiting and gassy??

  • Thanks so much for replying. I did ask but he was very vague and didn’t give me a straight answer. How do you find out if they have a lactose allergy? Is there a test?

  • I had similar issues. Turned out a lactose allergy was the issue. I would follow Dr advice, have you asked Dr how long to try a brand for?
