We saw a specialist and got a brain scan. I would definitely seek medical advice and get a proper diagnosis, but honestly, most three year olds look pretty ADHD at times.
Don’t listen to the uneducated. ADHD can only be diagnosed by a specialist. It takes a number of visits to a paediatrician over a number of months. And they’ll suggest other things to try before diagnosing and prescribing medication
My 6 year old has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. The types of traits you’d expect are inability to focus, fidgeting and unable to sit still, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty slowing down or tending to run everywhere, rapid speech, difficulty regulating emotions, and impulsiveness. For example, whenever my child is overtired or overstimulated, instead of crashing and sleeping, she gets more wound up and runs in circles. She gets more argumentative and aggressive. If ADHD is a genuine concern, see your GP for a referral to a behavioural paediatrician. They will get you and any carers (eg, childcare staff or teachers) to complete some behavioural assessments, and they’ll maybe ask you to see a child psychologist for assessments. Three is quite young for this, so it may be worth waiting a year or two. ADHD isn’t usually diagnosed until children are in primary school as by around 6 kids have learned to regulate emotions, etc. It’s easier to diagnose and clearly by then. If it does turn out your child has ADHD, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. ADHD kids can do just as well in school, and sometimes turn out to be twice gifted. They’re funny, they see the world a little differently, and they can be so loving since they often feel such depths of emotion. Hang in there, Mumma! Best of luck.
Many kids that age are full of energy and still have a short attention spam.
By who have you been told he might be adhd ?? Only doctors and psychologists can make that diagnosis. Wait some years and if you’re still concerned you could get him tested.
People never like to think it is but could hinder their learning if we choose not to believe. I would take the advice of experts not family and friends and go with your gut feeling. Can he maintain concentration or sit still etc
Being full of energy is fine. As a school teacher, I’d be looking to see what his focus is like. Can he sit and listen to a story for 5-10 mins? Can he listen to, follow and join in a conversation for 5 mins or so. It’s hard to know at 3 years old as most of his behaviours are probably age appropriate. I’d be waiting til 4 or 5 hyears of age before you worry too much.
