Hello!

Advice needed, my 16month old only sleeps in a portacot because it’s able to be rocked. I’ve rocked her from the day she was born. How can I ease the transition top stop rocking baby to sleep? She also never crawled but walked at 12months however she can not get up from a sitting or laying position. She had to be helped up & won’t try herself.

  • Just be persistent with the new method of settling that you choose. It may take a week or so but gradually she will adjust!

  • All too often we think we have a great idea that ends up being more work for us and really difficult habits to break.

  • I believe just being persistent and consistant can really help here

  • This is a good question. Basically, breaking any habit requires patience and persistence

  • I hope this toddler was taken to the Dr. There is definitely an issue if a baby can’t sit up alone by herself by 12 months. It could have been a muscle problem. Some babies don’t crawl for long before they start pulling themselves up and holding onto firm furniture or you. Apparently crawling strengthens muscles.

  • I feel your pain. I had the same problem with my daughter. Until 12 months of age we rocked her to sleep. Was a nightmare. Saw a sleep consultant and she advised to introduce a comfort item (my daughter never wanted a dummy, but loved a blankie). We were also advised to wrap her for sleeps and then gradually wean the wrap off after a few months and move to a sleeping bag. This worked for us.
I’m now at roughly the same stage with my son. He gets wrapped and somewhat rocked in our arms, and then put into the cot wrapped, awake but drowsy. He is slowly learning to self settle. Some nights he cries more than others. It’s hard because I don’t believe in letting babies cry it out. So I go in and cuddle him.
Unfortunately, there are no right or wrong answers. Just find what works for you and your child.
    Good luck!!!

  • Great! Really very interesting comments on this!

  • My daughter stopped needing to be rocked at 4 mths I just gradually weaned her off it

  • go to a doctor and get some advice xx

  • Just reduce the rocking over time@!

  • It’s a hard habit to break. Have you tried introducing a new comfort like a dummy or security blanket.

  • Hope this has been resolved for you.

  • I hope you found the answer you needed.

  • I hope you were able to find help from some of the answers below.

  • Rocking is a hard habit to break-especially for the parent.

  • Good luck and hope you found a way

  • Did you find out how?

  • Hope you found the answers to your problem

  • Hope you found the answers you were looking for. In regards to the not being able to get up from a sitting/ laying position, I definitely would have got her checked by a doctor, that doesn’t sound normal to me.

  • She has a unique way of learning! Lol
