Hello!

My daughter had her gestational diabetes testing today. The sugar made her feel really sick. They are worried that the baby is growing bigger than it should be. She has not gone past the 28 weeks before. She needs sugar fixes. How many of you had gestational diabetes, how did it effect you?

  • I had gestational diabetes with my middle child. I had to really carefully watch what I ate so I didn’t have to use insulin. I was booked in at 37 weeks to have a cesearean because of the size risk – but she came naturally just before.


  • Has your daughter actually been diagnosed with gestational diabetes? Some women have large babies without having gestational diabetes. If she does, they will tell her to curb her carbohydrate intake and test her blood glucose levels.


  • Hi Cynthea, I had Gestational Diabetes with my first pregnancy but not my next three. My sugar was very low, not high. I was diet controlled, but had to eat about 6-7 times a day, very small healthy meals and lots of carbs (thought I’d start looking like a piece of fruit loaf by the end). I had to prick my finger at least 3 times a day, more if I felt unwell. The worst thing I did was eat a Mars Bar when I had a sugar drop. It elevated my blood sugar level quickly for about an hour, then it plummeted lower than it was beforehand. Yes the doctors worried about a bigger baby, but she arrived at 37w 6d at 3kg (6lb,10oz). Both her and my blood sugar levels were stable at birth.
    I’ve since passed on all my info from the diabetes educator to a friend who was also diagnosed for the first time with baby number 8 (so far, she is diet controlled too).


  • I had Gestational Diabetes. They were concerned my baby was big too .. i had growth scans weekly from 34 weeks until delivery at 37w3d. I ended up needing insulin the last 3 weeks but my baby was only 3.4kg at birth and her blood sugars were normal as were mine after birth. I had horrible morning sickness so ate what I could when I could .. If she tries to be mindful of what she’s rating she’ll be fine. Try replacing some of the sugar fixes with protein fixes instead like peanut butter on toast etc.
