Hello!

We have so many toys and my son seems to play with all of them for 30 seconds. I am continuely trying to rotate them and give unused to charity. I know i am to blame buying them. How do i break this cycle. It really is time consuming!

  • Kids really don’t need an overload of toys. You may see there are some favorites they return to all the time. This may look like blocks, cars, lego and stacking cups and some puzzles and that’s it.

  • It is very difficult, when one can afford to do so, to not see something and think how much your child would love it.
This is when you need to stop and ask yourself the question of “Do they NEED it OR do YOU just want them to have it”.
Try to keep toy buying for special occasions such as Birthdays, Christmas etc or even as a reward for extremely good behaviour.
Think twice and ‘analyse’ your ‘reason’ for purchasing a toy BEFORE doing the ‘impulse buy’. It will put more money in your pocket OR maybe put the ‘cost’ of the toy into the childs bank account or donate it to charity.

  • I think this a common question these days, with my kids old toys I try to sell the good toys online or give them to charity. I have heard hospitals take toys in good condition for sick children to play.
What I do now is try to buy toys that are in sets so that they can be easily packed away and be given as birthday as well as Christmas presents. Also only buy toys on special occasions like birthdays and Christmas so that at these times you can give your child more but not adding new toys all the time.

  • If your asking your self how many is to many, then he had to many!, I know it’s hard not to get things for our kids all the time, but more often then not, they doing need them

  • Too many toys when you start tripping over them. Honestly pencils and crayons with paper are just as much fun, plus it explores their minds.

  • I would go through them keep a select few favourites and donate the rest. There really is such a thing as excess and may I suggest most library’s have a toy library where you hire the toys for so long than return, jhst lije a book! Great way to experience fun toys without the not so fun large price tag!

  • Try not to buy them but rather swap them with your friends so they seem ‘new’ to him. Sometimes if you put toys away for a little while and then bring them out they forget and then get all excited again.

  • Don’t buy new toys ;) Get rid of everything he doesn’t play with or is broken.

  • just put them all in a toy box and let your son get what he wants when he wants. it doesn’t matter how many he has but you are creating a child who will need excess as he grows to be happy

  • Rotate your son’s toys, then when you bring them back out, he will rediscover his love for them. At the moment he has too many distractions and only plays with them a little while.. If you can, play with your son and his toys, get him interested in them.

  • only buy at xmas and birthdays to cut down – yes rotate and give away toys just keep the special ones. its easy to become consumed into buying toys

  • I realised we had the same issue this Christmas, so the kids received all outside toys for Christmas. As of this year I have a new rule for xmas present buying…something the want, something they need, something to wear and something to read! I went through all the kids toys with them and told them that they needed to get rid of some. I told them that they can either throw them away or give to charity and they chose charity.

  • Us too. She has sooo many toys. That’s normal. People are always giving her things too. Maybe around christmas mums can get together and donate all our unused toys to a charity through this site. I would love to be apart of that. Or even a donation section for mums that cant afford toys. ???

  • Don’t worry we’ve done the same but we’ve decided from now on it’s only for Christmas and birthday. I’ve gotten rid of stuff they don’t need or use otherwise like you do rotate. I keep toys in a cupboard and then they’re like new toys for them. I think it though it doesn’t help others buy the kids toys too. So maybe if you wanted to for Christmas etc you could make arrangement with people to maybe go in on 1 toy and discuss what your child may actually need. Our parents decided to give the kids money that way we can get stuff as we needed since they have so many toys.

  • I have so many toys for my little one, our little townhouse is bursting. I have packed up some toys and also swapped some with friends who have younger/ older kids. Then when our child reaches the point of being able to use the toy, we swap back. Some things do get damaged but it’s not a big deal that happens both ways.

  • lots of interaction, my daughter is the same as below. she doesnt really like to play by herself, she prefers to play with me or others. she loves books too, so maybe just try to invest in educational toys etc that you can do together

  • try playing with him. my daughter would rather play with someone than by herself. she isn’t interested really otherwise

  • I have to say its nice buying toys for my children and to be honest I won’t be able to stop, I love them tooooo much!!

  • Organise toy swaps with friends to at least save money

  • I recently read kids ‘should’ have access to no more than 5 or 6 toys at any one time. I guess rotation would be very important too. Good luck!
