  • Most recommendations fall around 1-1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight for babies or around 11 grams of protein per day for children 7-12 months old. For example, an average 20 pounds, or 9.1 kg child would need approximately 9-14 grams of protein per day.

  • Protein is very important but it’s about a good balance

  • At 6 months, your baby will still be getting most of their nutrition from breast milk or formula. From 4-6 months is the time that you can start to introduce solid foods. Your baby will take only small amounts of solid foods at first. Start feeding your baby solids once a day, building to 2 or 3 times a day.
Many pediatric authorities, specifically in Canada, the EU and the U.K. recommend meat as one of baby’s first solid foods. Meat may be a good first food but probably not THE first food. You might give meat a try between 6-8 months old. Introducing meats earlier will help baby gain more iron, zinc and also protein.
Personally I started with egg as first solid food, which is also high in protein. But again, it’s just about the taste and chew experience in the beginning.

  • When they first switch to solids, they should still be having milk. There will be enough protein in the milk to not worry
