Hello!

My son is 7 weeks old and gets upset when my husband holds him when he is home after work. He is exclusively breastfed and spends the rest of the day with me. My husband is upset by this. Does anyone have any ideas how to build a better bond or why this might be happening?

  • Not unusual indeed. Dad’s time will come, I’ll promise !

  • It’s not unusual but having something Dad always does like the bath and/or putting bub down at night might help.

  • Just keep it up. Baby will get use to him.
Encourage skin to skin & dad to even shower with baby! Showering with baby is what my bub really reacted to

  • My bubs need mummy at that time generally cause they are cluster feeding ready for bed. Maybe in the morning before work? or if you can express 20-40 ml through the day daddy can do a little bottle of milk ?

  • Just try to give them as much time together when dad’s home. Your son will soon adjust.

  • share him around with loads of family and friends… get him used to being handled. the other thing is naked on naked get hubby to cuddle baby on his chest. Bubs will smell and sensory bond/

  • I had similar issue with first Bub so I would feed him and then hubby would burp him and bath him once at home.

  • I think it’s quite normal there’s a stronger bond with mum then dad in the beginning especially when the child is breastfed. First of all this will change over time. Things you could do now to increase the bond is that’s your husband who responds on your babies cries and hands him over to you for example a breastfeed. Another thing what he might want to do is going in bath together with your bub. Also take your bub between you in bed in the morning so he experiences physical contact with you both.
