Hello!

I recently had a baby and decided to have the Implanon done, I had taken the pill all my life (over 20 years)
I know that it can cause irregular periods but I have now had mine for 2 weeks straight….has anyone else had this? Not sure if I need to go back and see my doctor? Thank you

  • My advice to you would be to get it removed, I had mine put in when I had my daughter and I bled for 9months straight after having mittens in, once it was taken out I instantly stopped bleeding. Please look into other types of contraception, a different pill may work better for you

  • This happened to my daughter as well. Now after being on its for a year she pretty much never gets her period at all but still gets wraps pms symptoms etc. Occasionally she will get some light bleeding. Implanon seems to completely mess with your normal cycle. At least it has in her case but honestly see your doc if you ate concerned.

  • I would not recommend Implanon. Your doctor will tell you it takes time to settle but honestly mine caused so many problems I had it taken out again after a few months. Mood changes, extended periods, extreme depression. I hope it settles for you but be aware it might not

  • Hi
When I had my implant put in after my first child for me I had bleeding for more then 2 months informed my doctor just to be told it was normal just your body getting use to
the implant. My bleeding lasted for 6 months
before I ended up in hospital. I had it removed and the bleeding stopped.

  • I believe that is normal. I too have had a baby recently and decided to have Implanon done right after birth. Although I haven’t had my period yet, (I’m exclusively breastfeeding so it could’ve delayed my period), my doctor mentioned the side effects of having Implanon and irregular bleeding, including prolonged periods is one of them.

if you find your periods concerning or bothersome, I’d suggest you visit your doctor for peace of mind. They can assess whether this is within the range of normal side effects or if there’s another underlying cause.

  • Very normal in 1/5 of women. If it does this to you, it will not stop, so maybe find something else.

  • I do like the comment from Ellen about the possibility of an iron tablet. Iron deficiency can cause a number of issues; including tiredness. It is important to get medical advice about any issues and to also to discuss any additional supplements that may be needed. I always discuss medications and supplements with my GP.

  • Yes I agree, take any symptom that raises questions or makes you feel uneasy serious and see your health professional / doctor.
A period lasting 2 weeks after getting an Implanon (contraceptive implant) is considered a common side effect, as Implanon often causes irregular bleeding patterns, including prolonged periods, spotting, or heavier bleeding, especially in the first few months of use; this usually settles down within a few months for most women, but if the heavy bleeding persists, consult your doctor.
Keep an eye on your iron levels too !

  • I always see the a health professional if there are any concerns or doubts or issues with my body and health. It is always a good idea to have any concerns addressed and can alleviate worry or they can possibly amend a treatment or health regime or plan. A health professional is best placed to provide support.

  • I have known women who did have this side effect. It did stop and become regular or stop all together for some. I would go back to the GP so they can go through all the possible side effects you may experience.

  • I’d definitely go back to the Doctor as everyone is different and it might’nt be for you.
