Hello!

From everything I can find, it seems to be ok and beneficial to use coconut water and oil in babies first foods. Does anyone have any experience with this. Coconut water seems to have so many pluses going for it and they say coconut oil holds nutrients only found in breast milk! Health or hype?

  • hype, hype, hype. although there is health too it. what it more comes back to is it necessary and the answer is no. don’t waste your money. the nutrients your child needs are in fruits and vegetables. if your wanting to ‘boost’ your baby food just add a little formula powder

  • Definitely health. And I see no problem introducing coconut water and coconut oil in bubs daily menu. You’ve already done the research, lucky bub to have such a health aware mum

  • Yes I would double check with the GP too!

  • I would say cooking with coconut oil would be better as it’s a healthy oil. So if you were to cook meat in oil it be a better choice. But I wouldn’t use it to water down food or add into.

But it is good to use formula/breast milk to water down mash as adding extra nutrition. :)

  • I have read varying reports. some saying it has negative reports for coconut oil because of its type of oil in it

  • After 1 would be the best time to add it to the diet

  • I wouldn’t use it until Bub is 1.. But I suppose cooking with it should be ok.

  • I wouldn’t risk it. But if it’s not made already in the shops for your child’s age, then more than likely it shouldn’t be used.

  • ATTENTION : I spoke to health centre nurse & she’s one of those good old fashioned ones, she rolled her eyes but said it’s fine to add to veges & purées, she would stick with water & breast milk to drink till 12 months though :) thanks for all of the great answers.

  • i don’t know. i think that it would be ok but i personally wouldn’t do it

  • This one might be good to double check with the GP or your midwife

  • Have you had success in getting information from your GP?

  • No idea – I’d talk to your GP or a nitritionist. You don’t want to get this wrong.

  • We use them all the time and haven’t had a problem. I mix the coconut water with puréed fruit as a smoothie style drink. Cook with the oil no problem!

  • I gather it has some really healthy qualities to it for kids. But i would use it as a complement to a kids food but not in everything.

  • I think it is best to check with your infant welfare nurse or doctor first.

  • I have been thinking about it too, my baby is 8 month old. Not to replace breast milk, but to give it a little every now and then as I drink fresh coconut water every day. But I will check with my GP before I give her anything though.

  • I suggest you discuss this with your GP and community nurse as they will have the most current information on coconut water.

  • Lots to think about there…I should have mentioned bub is 6 months, enjoying basic solids and still breast fed. Not looking to replace but just another ingredient. I will definitely ask my health nurse on my next visit.

  • Hype- use water, like fruit juice coconut water is empty calories, it contains carbohydrates and can hardly be good for teeth, I assume that you would rather bubs fill up on food than an energy containing fluid
