Hello!

She loves watching ABC kids and sometimes its the only way I can eat lunch or get essential tasks done. I do entertain her in other ways, such as story reading, tummy time, play gym, walks, having a chat, singing songs but sometimes I need a break too. I feel bad but can’t see the harm in it?

  • Some kids shows can be a learning tool, 4 months is young but you may see mirroring behaviour. But you do need a break and if this gives you some you time then should be fine.

  • I dont see an issue with it. We could all use a time out, and you spend quality time with bub

  • To get some time to yourself, I see no serious issue with this. Bub is probably most fascinated with the colour and movement, she wouldn’t be absorbing too much other info

  • Like you stated you do other activities with your Bub…so a little TV won’t be damaging at all! ABC4kids have appropriate programs for young children anyway!

  • Wow, you’re lucky to have a 4 month old that actually watches TV! Mine didn’t stay still long enough! I don’t have problem with it as long as it’s just to give you needed time to do other things and spend lots of time socialising with Bub at other times

  • At 4 months of age, I don’t see it being a problem. They have a relatively short attention span so I’m sure it won’t be long before she lets you know she’s bored and had enough.

  • it is up to you. i think that it is fine. you can get stuff done but maybe 30mins is ok. As long as you are still keeping an eye on her

  • I would steer clear of using it as a motivator or entertainment, you might be setting yourself up, you also want her to learn to entertain herself

  • Can’t see anything wrong with it, at the end of the day it’s your choice.

  • As long as you are still interacting with them and not sitting in front of TV from morning to night. I don’t see the harm in it, they love the colours and sounds. They also get to hear a variety of words and accents.

  • You should keep your baby as far away from the screen as possible. The rays on the screen are fairly strong. Even toddlers and older should stay right back from the screen. One of the top Opthalmologists in SA advised us against letting babies watch TV, if necessary only for a few minutes and as far away from the screen as possible. He actually prefers babies not to watch it at all. Have you tried just playing a CD??. Just about every person I know that has watched TV as a baby has had to wear glasses before the age of 25.

  • Not really, but if you have to do it, make it short.

  • I don’t personally see any harm in it

  • I don’t see the harm in a little tv. It’s a great distraction when you want to eat or put some washing on. It was the only way I could get my eldest son to do more than 10secs of tummy time!

  • Why feel bad? I can’t see the harm in it either, you’re her mother so it’s up to you.

  • At 4 months I’d say take it. If it stops the tears and lets you do something then go for it, abc is very educational and the bright colours would be great for the mind.

  • Of course it’s ok, it’s them interacting. It’s actually a good thing in a way

  • No harm in it at all I’m sure there aren’t many people in this world who can actually say that their child has never or will never watch TV.
Do what you need to get five minutes to yourself I’ve done it plenty of time :)

  • Whatever works for you. Like you said you do lots of others things. Tv is just one in a list of many and you need time for you too.

  • I don’t see any harm if it is in moderation – my kids have all watched tv. Although the experts reckon no tv before two.
