Is it worth planning home renovation projects earlier than waiting? - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

hey I’m thinking about doing a big renovation on our living area and outdoor patio next year, but I keep wondering if it’s better to start planning now rather than later. We’ve been chatting with a few tradies but their numbers keep changing, and I’m not sure how to budget properly for all the materials, labour and unexpected costs.

I’ve heard things like waiting too long can push up prices, but on the other hand, prices might drop in sales or if there’s an economic turnaround. Has anyone here planned a major renovation early and found it saved them money or stress? Or did you regret doing it too soon?

Also, for people who are budgeting larger projects, I’ve been told that using estimating services for construction can help get clearer numbers before you commit has anyone used them and found them worthwhile for planning costs? Would love to hear your real experiences, tips or pitfalls to avoid.

  • Planning early usually helps. It gives you clearer cost ranges, reduces stress, and lets you adjust the design before committing. Tradies’ prices change all the time, which is why early estimates are useful. Estimating services can be worthwhile for larger projects to set a realistic budget, but keep a 20% increase to what you think the cost will be and avoid locking in contracts too early. My daughters kitchen ended up being $20, 000 more than expected due to wiring, roof insulation removal and new ceiling required, not to mention the painting and the increase cost in appliances.

  • It is always better to plan. There are some other obstacles to overcome though. I tried to start planning for a house extension and found that tradies have wait lists over a year and the Council approval would only last for 12 months. So it was a bit of a catch 22!
