Hello!

I have a 5 month old who is breastfed but I’m starting some solids. No poo for 5 days!!! lots of wind though. Is my baby constipated?

  • Bf babies can go up to 10 days without poo but now you’re introducing solids it could be constipation.

  • It’s ok for babies to go quite a few days between poops, but make sure you check and take note of the next poop. If it’s hard and not very large then possibly yes to constipation. If a normal poop then it could be her getting used to digesting differently. If bubs not in pain (and you know when they’re not themselves) then go to the doctor or clinic for peace of mind

  • It all goes by the last poo. If it was a dry hard ball yes, but if it was fine then just wait unless she seems in some extreme discomfort,

  • Try feeding baby pears or give coloxyl drops

  • It’s OK for babies to go without pooing for days or weeks.

  • If you are still breastfeeding, please don’t give your baby extra water, there is no need for it. It can upset his tummy.
My boy had the same, breastfeeding mum. I started him on solids a bit and he didn’t go for 4 days. GP said it is completely normal . Around 5-6 months babies digestive system is changing, there is just so much going on specially with introducing food as well. Feel babies tummy and give a gentle massage that helped mine ;)
However if you are concerned and your baby is not responding or in pain taking him to the GP to get him checked out.

  • I was told by the CHN that it isn\’t uncommon for Breast fed babies to poo once every ten to fourteen days, both my boys have lived up to this statement, with extreme amounts of wind, and stench!!

  • Is your baby drinking more water? In the hot weather may pay to give them more water If you are worried GP might be worth a vist.

  • Maybe see your GP/community nurse for advice and reassurance.

  • Maybe u might want to take him/her to the gp to make sure as I think there is stuff u can get for them as all my kids had this when little..

  • Happy to report the chia may of worked? never seen so much poo!

  • My baby has the same problem but she can go up to 15 days without having a poo. I breast feed her and give her some solids as well and I have had her tested for other bowel problems but they all came back clear. My baby also has a lot of wind but my doctor has told me that some babies don’t poo as often as others because all babies have different bowel movements. My doctor also advised me to give my baby puréed pears everyday and once I started feeding her the pears my baby now poo’s at least twice a week.

  • no poo yet… lots of stinky wind though. abdo is soft. my friend suggested chia so I mixed a tiny bit in with his weetbix

  • Two of my babies did this! One used to poo once every 20 days! It had me quite worried but every health professional told me not to worry, as she was breastfed. Starting solids seemed to help things along, the poos came more often, not necessarily daily. If you are starting solids, your baby will need to poo. You can make some puréed prune juice, water it down though or try puréed pears, that seems to get things moving. Rice cereal can cause constipation, so make sure that is not the only food bub is having. You can always call into your health nurse and ask for advice, ring 13HEALTH and they will give you the best advice. Hopefully your bub has already pooped by the time this was posted, if not, good luck.
