Hello!

“I have a very fussy 7 year old. He is more interested in playing than eating and I am struggling to find healthy snacks for his lunch box. He will have a bite or two of an apple or pear and will not touch other fruit. I like to make things at home for him, but he never eats them. He says he only likes things with chocolate. To make things harder he has egg and nut allergies. He is eating less and less at school and I’m worried that he’ll start falling behind because of his lack of energy in the class room. I’d love some advice and some great recipes that might help in getting some nutritious food into my boy!” Do you have any lunchbox ideas?

  • I pack a sandwich packed with there favourite fillings with a very small apple and a juice or can he buy his lunch from the school canteen? At 7 he would like this treat just make sure the teachers keep an eye on him so he does buy and eat something.Usually u hand in a bag with your choice in the mornings Good luck

  • omg I feel your pain, I have a 6 year old and it’s not easy filling the lunchbox. I bake once a week a healthy slice/loaf/muffins and put in choc chips (and hide things like chickpeas in them.) Jessica Seinfeld has some great recipes for this kind of baking and I just got her cookbook from the local library. I also give my son rye sandwiches, choc milk (its dairy and better than juice), and homemade popcorn is a good one.

  • Really great question, was wondering myself ! Thanks

  • Have a look at the 4ingredients cookbooks they have great recipes also have you tried getting him involved in the cooking of things for his lunchbox,if he makes it he might be more inclined to eat it and it’s great fun for the 2 of you to do together.

  • Not sure if it has been mentioned but have a chat to his teacher – at that age they are still watched while they eat so they should be able to keep an eye on it.
My fussy 7yr old takes an apple, sandwich & a snack (yoghurt, mini muffin, cake, biscuits etc) most days.

  • Get their input. Worked wonders in my house when my daughter was really fussy. She had great ideas

  • I hope that you have found some ideas on what to give a fussy 7 year old

  • You could try putting little jokes in his lunch box on a post it note or something. That was you can always have a little giggle at the end of the day too =)

  • we sit down have have a look at recipes and we cook them together over the weekend and wrap them up for the school lunch boxes and i do find them in the box of lunch supplies after school
    i have 9,7,5 year old

  • I had this problem and I didn’t pack a very health luck box and explaine to the school I just needed my girl to eat and I would get the health things in at home. When she still didn’t eat the school helped by doing a lunch box check for me. Once that started my daughter started to eat her lunch

  • You should wait till he is hungry and not give him any snacks, its because you keep giving him bits of things that keep him going as well as filling up with drinks.Let him go hungry for a few days if he doesnt eat a meal given do not give anything else till next meal time and offer the next meal eventually he will start to pick more and more off his plate.Do not worry he will not starve him self but will get hungry after a few days of this.

  • Maybe some fruit leather (dried fruit strips, you can make them at home) because it can be eaten on the run, or maybe try museli bars with a chocolate coating/dip

  • Try making a basic fruit salad with passionfruit on top

  • Check out websites like neat2eat and lunchboxes with love, they both sell some great products you can use to make his lunchbox more fun, exciting and in turn, appealing. Good luck!

  • Perhaps celery stick with cream cheese. Allergies do make lunch box fillings a bit tricky. Maybe some dried fruit. A small tub of yoghurt. Cut out the bread in a shape of a teddy ear head, maybe write a little note asking if he liked his lunch, pop it in his lunch box, he may eat something extra & reply back, bit of fun.

  • Its hard with allergies. You could try pasta salad mini homemade pizzas. Wraps fried rice, homemade nut free museli bars , fruit salad, homemade scrolls, potato salad ,cheese with cabana and biscuits, these are all thing that will be fine in a lunch box and are tasty.

  • I hope you were able to put to use some useful ideas from this panel

  • Omg I need to know this too. It’s hard to think of new things that they will actually eat.

  • So many great ideas here, I’ll definitely be using some of these suggestions next year
