Hello!

I have grade 6 who is struggling with math and love some ideas to assist her in this to help her improve her math skills and understanding.

  • My son was struggling with maths in year 6 as well. I ended up finding a group tutor after school. She was a retired maths teach and brilliant. Kai attended for about 2 terms and made a massive improvement! She just had a different approach that seemed to work for him. Kai went on to be in the top 5% for mathematics in years 8 – 10. It was well worth the time and investment to see him happy and proud of himself.

  • Do they know their times tables? If not, this is a great place to start. It gives them confidence and is a basis for so many more maths problems. Start with 1s easy peasy chimpanzeezee, 10s, 2s, 5s, 11s, 3s, 4s,. Then go onto 9s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 12s. Put charts up in the toilet. Make up silly rhymes, find worksheets online (I love Maths Salamander for free sheets) https://www.math-salamanders.com/

  • Other parents in your network might also have contacts.

  • A first point would be to ask the teacher for support and ideas.

  • There are many online tutors these days, it’s a good option. Is there an older sibling who could help? Or a cousin? Aunt or Uncle? Talking to the teachers is a must, maybe there’s a student who is great at math that she can pair up with in class, or that could be a study buddy after school. Good luck with finding the solution that works for everyone.

  • I’d be asking the teacher how you can best help. They know where your child is struggling and I am sure could assist. Maybe they could even supply the extra work for you.

  • Have you talked to the teachers? They might have an idea.

  • Great idea

  • Consider a tutor – maybe a teacher on maternity leave, a student studying teaching, etc.
