Hello!

Do you do anything for the Melbourne cup? It’s new to me and it’s on a Tuesday so isn’t everyone at work? I understand in Melbourne it’s a day off but everywhere else, do you go out and watch the race? Do your kids go with you etc?

  • No we choose to stay home and just re-energise and relax for the following work day!@ its nice we all get to have a day off on this day, kids included as we are in melbourne! We definitely try to watch the race or watch the recaps if we miss it.

  • I know when I was a child; it was a race that was televised in schools; however; times have changed and that has not happened with my children. It no doubt depends on the state or territory of residence as to how much attention is paid to the race on a public holiday in Victoria.

  • We do not do anything for this event; at home or at work. I have no interest in this event and there seems to have been a steady shift away from it in my area and workplace over the years. No one does sweeps or lunches or watches the race. It seems to pass without anyone talking about it.

  • When I was in paid work, it was common to have a Melbourne Cup lunch (although it often started earlier than proper lunchtime) and a few sweeps. So it might be cold chicken and salads, maybe a glass of a cheap wine, and the sweeps (basically random bets). Now I’m not in paid work, I basically ignore the Cup.

  • Lol I had to Google what the Melbourne Cup is about and we live in Australia since 2009 ! I always thought it was a foot ball match of some kind, but I see it is one of the most famous horse races on the planet. We live in QLD so no day off for us either and no we do not watch or follow this race.

  • Not to be *that person* but I don’t get down with any sports that involve animals. I don’t love the practises around it. But what I do love about the Melbourne Cup is the fashion. I love seeing the ladies all glammed up with beautiful head pieces. When I was working there would usually be a random allocation of horses to everyone and the winner would get a small prize, but then it’s business as usual. If you nip to the pub it’ll be going off.
