Hello!

After some mummy feedback please. My daughter is almost 18mths. She is still in rear facing seat as the marked line as to where her shoulders should be before forward facing (3 in 1 seat) is like far away. I realise this marking is on actual cover of seat and if i pull and push and ‘fix’ it somewhat she would be closer to that line. Should I just turn her round? What are the risks? Obviously that marker line is there for a reason. My older two who are now teens would never be still in the capsules at this age. Yes she was and is little. What do you all think? Thanks for taking time to answer.

  • Most children r moved to forward facing at 6 months… 12 months max. She must b over looking at a seat??

  • Use the seat to the max it is safest.
My son was 3.7y when I turned him.
If under the rear facing line they must be rear facing.

A child is 5 times safer rf. it’s not hurting her being rf. infact it will save her.
Remember a step up in a car seat is a down grade in safety.

  • My daughter is also bigger and so at 6 months, she went forward – she met the weight requirement to do so. She was just too squashed in the rear facing and it was impossible to get her in and out!
He loved and still loves facing the world and being able to see us.

  • I agree with Benita, if ur not sure get a professional to look at it. Can’t muck around with these things 🙂

  • I’d keep her rear facing as long as possible. Even when she grows and her legs are cramped. The saying goes ‘broken leg cast it, broken neck casket’. Its much safer to be rear facing.

  • Yeah I moved my son to forward facing a lot younger than that! Just check the guidelines, I think it goes on weight

  • Is the child happy facing backwards, if so just leave her facing backwards, my children hated facing backwards I think as they got older it made them a bit carsick or maybe it was just that they couldn’t see me, if she dosnt like facing backwards I would turn her around to face the front, I did with mine and the difference when traveling was amazing, if in doubt just pop into your local ambulance station, they are more than willing to help you out, hope this helps

  • They say the longer the better, I had big boy so he was turned pretty early. But I think the biggest thing is their neck strength etc and at that age I would say she is fine. It comes down to what you are more comfortable with. I like to be able to see my babies and my little man likes to see everything so it made travel better for both of us. But my second one on the way may be different it has to work for you and bubs. But if in doubt always check seating guidelines for your own peace of mind to be sure on your decision

  • I had the opposite problem, my lo was and still is a huge boy! He was still pretty young when we moved him forward facing, about 5 months. I had the whole safety dilemma as well, but we were struggling to get him in and out of the car seat because he was so big. I rang the ambulance (because they fit the car seats in QLD) and they were of no help at all with providing advice, so in the end I rang the police and they said, if he was 10kg+ then he was fine to go forward facing. Maybe ring your local police station and ask what their advice would be in your situation. At 18months though she should be ok, but I would definitely confirm this with the people that know first…

  • My son is only 10months old but if I were to put him facing backwards his legs are cramped so now ive got him forward facing as he has more room and can see where he’s going not where he’s been lol

  • We’re in the same situation with 13 month old. She hates it & wants to sit up so bad. They never had shoulder guidelines with son & he was turned around much younger.

  • Have a look a the guidelines (google the manufacturer and the roads and traffic authority in your state) but I think you will find she is safe to turn around.

  • The recommendations now say keep them reverse facing for as long as possible. I’d keep her RF if I was you. I plan to do it for my no 2 and 3 babies.

  • We turned my daughter around to forward facing at 6 months as she was very strong & hated facing backwards, however my 5 month old son who is just as strong is very small & he doesnt mind facing backward so I will leave him there for as long as he fits & likes it. I think safety is most important & it is said that reward facing in a car accident is more likely to save a childs life than forward facing. Also unless their is a big issue with it – getting in & out of seat or they dont like it – then no need to change a good thing 🙂

  • i would leave her rear facing as by law those line are there for a reason. It’s for safety reasons. I was told by the RAA the other day its a $350 fine and loss of 3 dimerit points.

  • I would turn her around if the rest of her body is strong

  • I have the same issue but my baby girl is very tall. I read that you should face rear as long as possible for better safety, not sure if this is true though.

  • Good luck to what ever you decide

  • they are safer rear facing, however as long as they are heacy enough its fine.

  • My 15 month old nephew is forward facing and has been for a while. As long as they are secure and can hold themselves up it shouldn’t be a problem.
