It will come, take the pressure off and relax

I toilet trained my daughter at 3 years and 7 months old. Somehow she was not ready before. I didn’t pressure her, I found it a pity for the extra money spent on diapers 😉 but for the rest I just started slowly. And at that age it went very well. One evening I asked her if she was willing to go to bed without a diaper. She said yes. She went to bed. No problem at all. She never wet the bed. I loved that!! 🙂

One of ours started to toilet train then suddenly refused. WE think it was bewcuase he started clowning around when somebody was minding him and he almost fell into the toilet. When he started to show interest again we re-started the process. Sometimes kids are so busy playing or cocncentrating on other things that they either forget to do or delay for too long. Night time may take longer. We woke him up and took him to the toilet when we went to bed. When we found he was doing very little or none at that time we stopped getting him up. We have had very few accidents since that.

Sometimes it just needs to click in the child. Generally number 2s take longer for kids to get. My oldest was just over 2 and half when he was toilet trained but was very distracted and needed to be prompted to do no 2s before he did it in his pants. My second was 2 and 9 mths when he was toilet trained and just took to it naturally. I don’t know if it was watching his older brother or if he was just ready.

I’ve limited experience as I’ve only toilet trained one child – number two is nearly ready though! I watched family & friends persevere through it, but actually found it much easier & less stressful to just wait till my son was ready. He was a little over 3, I kept offering him the toilet but no pressure, and it was then almost overnight. Have had 2 accidents since, and he night trained really quickly then too. I think we feel pressure to train them early – I did anyway, as pretty much everyone I know had their kids trained at 2. But 3 is actually much more normal. And also less risk of damaging muscles down there too – have a little Google, it’ll help ease your mind. All the best 🙂
