I have four under 6 and although the 3,4 and 6 year old cover themself Hubby and I still have to go in and recover. They started to cover themselves once in toddler bed and didn’t have the cot rail to contend with.
Our youngest was about 2 from memory. However he is more likely to feel hot and push it off in his sleep and possibly be part way on top of it. He wakes easily so I kept a baby balnket handy to put on him during the night if he felt cold.
My toddler switched to a blanket at around 20 months. He loves to copy is so once he realised that was how we slept it was all pillow and blanket/doona from there!
Mine went from a grow bag to a doona. As soon as this occurred, she liked to sleep with it snuggled up quite a bit. Mine was never one for covering herself with a blanket – except for a laugh during play.
I think my kids knew the difference between hot and cold and knowing how to take care of themselves in some way when I transferred them out of my bedroom and they slept in their own rooms. It would be around 21/2-3 when you can talk to them and they understand you a bit better . I just taught them if you are cold put jumper/blanket on , and take it off when hot etc and they worked it out themselves in the end . This was also a time I knew oh my , they are growing up and no longer newborns …
