Hello!

Does anyone have any suggestions to relieve painful leg cramps, mostly at night, during pregnancy? They are getting so bad they wake me up at night. I have tried magnesium cream, bananas, heat packs and being active, walks, prenatal pilates/yoga, during the day.

  • Also incorporate magnesium rich foods into your dite
    Magnesium-rich foods

    pumpkin seeds, 30g — 156mg.
    chia seeds, 30g — 111mg.
    almonds, 30g — 80mg.
    spinach, boiled, ½ cup — 78mg.
    cashews, 30g — 74mg.
    peanuts, ¼ cup — 63mg.
    soymilk, 1 cup — 61mg.
    rolled oats, cooked in unsalted water, 100g — 29mg.

  • I would suggest high strength Magnesium tablets. Also having your legs slightly elevated during the night and keeping them warm enough makes a difference

  • Omg they are the worst. I found when I felt one coming on I would stretch my leg out straight and sometimes that would make it not as bad.

  • Not sure if this is helpful, but most leg cranps are caused by dehydration so make sure you’re keeping up with your H20

  • I know that you’ve tried magnesium cream but I found magnesium tablets worked for me. Ask your chemist for an appropriate dosage

  • If you tried all those things, maybe a visit to your GP is needed. Have you tried all of the above for an extended period? Some will neec repeat attempts before they work

  • A second for the epsom salts

  • I had that too and it was hard to find a solution. I used to sleep with my feet ellivated on a few pillows. The good news is that it somehow went away straight after the birth of my child!!

  • I have tried epsom salt foot bath and find that helpful at night

  • Are you allowed to take magnesium tablets while pregnant? I’ve read its meant to be good for cramps. Have you tried elevating your legs while lying down? That may help also

  • Yes I got leg cramps so bad on my last pregnancy hurt so bad I actually had trouble walking afterwards I tried to massage it as much as possible.

  • Hope you get some relief from the cramps!

  • I had them…my mum same me leg lotion for pregnant women from overseas. It was a life saver

  • The only thing I could do was to stay well hydrated. Maybe get some advice from a GP?

  • Magnesium! That really helped me. I had cramps during all my three pregnancies.

  • I used Magnesium Oil – not sure if there’s much difference between that and the cream but it helped me. I would bath my feet in bucket of warm water and magnesium salt and then apply the oil to my legs from the knees down and it really helped me. Good luck

  • * massage
    * exercise/movement
    * make sure not to cross legs or stand for prolonged time / circulation
    * hydration
    * eat enough of these key nutrients: potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium (electrolytes). you find this in foods like; banana, sweet potato, avocado, beans & lentils, melon, milk, pickle juice, dark leafy greens, orange juice, nuts & seeds, salmon, tomato (juice)

  • I didn’t find anything worked except massaging them out. The pain would subside but my legs would still be tight and cramped. With my second pregnancy, every day at noon I would get horrid cramps with pain shooting down the back of my legs. I would plan to be lying down a few minutes prior to as my knees would buckle underneath me. All the best and I hope it gets better for you.

  • That’s a big selection of things you’ve tried. I’m not sure what else to offer xx

  • The only thing that worked for me and I’m using at the moment is a pregnancy pillow.
    I’ve got one shaped like a U.
    I sleep with it in between my legs and it helps to prop me in the right sleeping position.
    If you go into catch of the day, just look up pregnancy pillow and the one that’s fifty bucks is the best one.
