  • I don’t have it, our pets are 9 & 19 – no regrets!

  • Read the fine print and see what is covered – my dog had an abscess and most didn’t cover dental, we didnt have insurance. Some vets to payment plans for big bills

  • We looked into it and found it to be quite expensive. Also, they told us that it wouldn’t cover normal vet bills (ie vaccination appointments, annual check ups etc) it would only cover accidental injuries/illness. We found that the chances of our pet actually getting hurt/sick when they were predominantly inside or in our yard (no access to other animals) would be slim. So we decided against it.
Just make sure you read the fine print!

  • My vet says a 15kg mixed breed is the healthiest kind of dog to have. Alas I love poodles and they are riddled with health problems! Save your money, chances are your dog will be just fine x

  • We are currently looking at a $2000 vet bill for our 13 1/2 yo dog. So I would say it’s definitely worth getting, we didn’t with this dog, but will with our next. It’s something you don’t miss until you need it

  • Yes. For big dogs especially as any vet treatment can be very expensive. If not insurance then certainly put some into an account regularly.

  • I have 2 pedigree miniature dachshunds that cost me a lot of money, I looked at pet insurance and did get it but cancelled it once I read the PDS, I have also recently been advised by the Dachshund Appreciation Society not to bother as they do not cover any problem that can be called inherited, and dachshunds tend to have patella problems, back problems etc, as they are pedigree they deny these claims, and this is a major insurer that also looks after abandoned animals, basically we looked at the amount we needed to pay and we have been putting the money fortnightly into a high interest acct by auto direct debit, as they are now 8 and we have had a couple of vet problems amounting to about $2000 we are still way ahead and if we needed to spend $10k on a back operation the money is there, and if we don’t then we are ahead, so basically we are self insuring, fortunately we did have the means that should one have got ill before we built up the vet fund we could have afforded the treatment, but if you can put the same money away each fortnight then I think you are better off because insurance only covers some things and if the insurer can get out of it they will,

  • I’ll be following this question as I have heard it’s not worth it and was wondering too.

  • Also; negotiate and query prices with your vet.

  • It can be expensive and look at the fine print; coverage. Always set money aside for vet bills.

  • Yes because vet expenses can be very pricy when illness disease or accident come up, just look carefully into each policy available to make sure you are covered for common tthings.

  • save that money yourself. we had to put down a dog and it was nearly $200 but the dog had been hit by a car and had spent a night in there on medication to take away the pain. had a broken back

  • We looked into it, far too expensive.

  • If it were me then yes i would get pet insurance for sure as those vet bills can come in very high, you just never know whats going to happen i guess its just like car insurance its a bill you have to pay “just in case something happens”
Especially in Australia what with snakes around.

  • My sister in law has two labs, and has pet insurance, it has saved her thousands as the labs like to eat evereything
