Hello!

I recently subscribed to the ABC Reading Eggs program for my 4 year old daughter. So far she’s doing really well with the program and I’m interested in getting the supporting book packs, but not sure if it’s worth it. Has anyone used these and would you recommend the additional support?

  • If the programme is working and she’s benefiting from it, for sure purchase more, see how she goes and stop if need be

  • I haven’t heard of the ABC Reading Eggs. If she’s benefitting from the programme, I would say it’s well worth the money

  • I think just let her have fun with the program at the moment. If she is enjoying it just go with it. The books may make it feel more like work if you add them in with the reading eggs game. My daughter loves the Reading Eggs apps.

  • cool post them for sure! i just found out that my child’s school is using these. My child said that her teacher was going to look into a way to allow the kids to use this at home.

  • I haven’t got the pack as yet, still considering it as an option but she’s doing well and enjoying the games (program) without them. I think the books would definitely help reinforce what she learns through the program and would be a great way to practice what she’s learning as I think the program runs ahead too quickly sometimes. But I don’t want it to become a chore either. I’ve actually started making my own materials to help with her reading. Might even post them to the Arts and crafts section when I get a moment of others are interested.

  • how did you go? did you get the pack? do you like it? should others get it, in your opinion

  • If she is having fun playing with the program then leave it at that. I would be careful about putting on too much pressure before starting school. You want then to want to learn, not be put off before they even start school

  • That’s some great information Shay. I struggle with reading stories and find it amazing how people can get so much out of a kids book with only a few words per page. I will try some of your methods and see how we go!

  • Thanks so much for that info Shay, that’s really helpful ☺

  • Nothing beats reading with your mum or dad. At this age try and get very basic books with repetitive sentences with a one work variation so you know they are not reading from memory. They must have pictures that match what is in the sentences. Guided reading books are fantastic. They have things like I like apples. I like bananas. I like to eat oranges. As a teacher. We use these books and give what we call a book introduction. (Needs some knowledge of letters and sounds) We don’t read the book to them necessarily but we give the language that is tricky and give a run down of what the book is about. Then ask if she has had a similar experience. The book above was called fruit salad. Talk to her about fruit salad. Ask her if she knows what it is? Has she had it before? What was in her fruit salad? It gives her a connection to the book. Then open to the first page ask her what she sees on this page? A bowl of bananas. Say something like I like bananas and point to the word like. This says like. What letter does like start with. Things like that. Happy to give more information should you like it. We have a handbook we send home with parents to help encourage their child to read independently following the same basic structure we do. Happy to post should you like to read it. I’m all about encouraging children to read. It’s my passion!
Hope I haven’t babbled to much!

  • Great question. I will also be following the answers

  • Interesting question and will be following the answers. Interesting topic.

  • it is up to you. i went into one of these programs years ago but ended up cancelling because my child enjoyed being able to pick out a book and browse at the shop vs being sent a book that she had no control over. Children grow quickly and their interests change. My daughter LOVES reading but when she was littler, she just wanted a princess story.
