Hello!

I’ve been made redundant. It’s horrible.
If this has happened to you, how long were you out of work for?

  • It hasn’t but don’t dwell on it. You may look back in time and find you are glad it happened as there may be something much better out there for you. I can see this was posted in June so hopefully you have already found that place. If not just concentrate on applying and make sure you let it be know to everyone that you are looking as often it is by word of mouth that you find something. Good Luck.

  • Another strategy I used in addition to my comments below; was to upskill and do some additional training in my profession. It was good to acquire some additional skills and update current skills. It was also a good addition to the CV. There are a range of courses that can help with skills and it has the benefit of extending networks too. Again, good luck!

  • I worked somewhere that was closing down and I reached out to my networks. I did have time before the closing down to catch up with people for chats about career and jobs. It did pay off and I found an opening for a position for a few months. Several years later I am still with this organisation. Word of mouth, networks and connections can help. Good Luck!

  • Yep! was promised my job was safe, only for the company to lie and send me a letter outlining redundancy and 28 days to finish up! It was the longest 28 days ever and everyone I worked with would act like I was dying, all would give me a sad look and hug me, anyway it worked out for the better, I found my dream job and there’s no looking back now 🙂

  • Been there done that. I have had this happen a number of times and still to this day I scratch my head wondering why. Two of the jobs were roles I did I could do from anywhere in the World. It didn’t matter that the Company was moving interstate.
The advice given to me was you will find a better job. And yes it was true because of the training and experience I have. I still get offers via Linkedin so make sure your Resume is up to date and use lots of key words with hashtags on your Profile. Good luck

  • I am really sorry this has happened. I haven’t been in this situation so couldnt fully understand what you are going through, but understand it must be really overwhelming and I have supported a few friends through this so can offer some practical pointers.
    – you can apply for JobSeeker straight away even if you are serving a notice period. Centrelink can take a long time so it is a good idea to get on this straight away.
    – if you have a mortgage you can contact your bank to move to interest only repayments and also ask for a more competitive interest rate
    – depending on the type of role you do, consider going in and talking to people rather than waiting for a job to be advertised
    – this must be truly overwhelming. Make sure you take care of you. If you need extra support you can get a mental health care plan from the doctor where you are able to see a psychologist for 6 sessions under Medicare.
    – Airtasker may be able to give you a couple of temporary boosts
    – I have seen lots of data entry ads around but I don’t know the legitimacy of them.

  • It’s so disheartening when it happens. It only happened to me once in my early 20s, the store went onto liquidation. I was lucky my boss gave me some cash to hide away from the auditors who were in store so I actually got my last pay. Hopefully you can find work in your industry quickly, or something small to make due until then. Wishing you luck
