You perfectly can do this yourself, it really isn’t hard.

No need to get a professional. I would however get professional advice from your paint store on how to go about painting the furniture.

I would paint it. It’s not hard, just clean and sand smooth, but make sure you use compatible paint. Take a piece into your local hardware store for advice. Or you could go shabby chick and just sand in places. If you can’t be bothered with the sanding part there is a new chalk paint you can use. Just wash the piece and then paint

you can try it yourself – worst that can happen is that you might then need to get a professional to do it if it doesn’t work out

You could always try and give them the “shabby chic” look by sanding them lightly to give them a roughened finish. Then use some pretty mats on the top of them, so that they brighten up the room.

check to see if Bunnings have any free courses – I know that they do a lot of them at our local one.

We have successfully painted furniture too. The key is to use the right paint, oil based enamel is too hard and these days water based is just as good. You will need to sand carefully before you paint and lightly between coats. Get some advice at Bunnings or similar.

I would do it my self as it’s always fun or like some one else has said just put white table cloths over them or some nice white runners so they would still blend in

Totally agree with you raewyn1969. An electric sander makes lighter work of the job. Still need the bits of sand paper for drawer knobs etc but the rest would be much easier with an electric sander.

I have sanded and painted or twice stained numerous pieces of furniture and the one big thing I can suggest when doing it yourself is a electric sander or cordless sander. You can pick up a reasonable one new for under $50 or you might be able to pick up a good second hand one cheaper (but they can save you hours of work depending on the size of furniture you are working on).

It can be done. I sanded my sons tallboy right back and painted it in a dark jarrah to match his bed. It takes patience and my first attempt almost saw me in tears on my bottom in the garage. I basically stripped back what I had done with turps, adjusted my technique and tried a little more patience and I got a great result. I put drop sheets down in my garage and did it drawer by drawer, night by night with a few cuppas along the way. I was very proud of myself and saved a lot of money!

Just do one piece at a time and they should be able to help you out with the best products at your local paint store.

Better Homes & Gardens’s Tara says that if you sand it then wash it down with sugar soap it can then be recoated
